Okay, so, I gotta tell you about this place, McFarlin Tennis Center. I’d heard about it from a couple of buddies who play there, and, well, I finally decided to check it out myself. I’m not a pro or anything, just a guy who likes to whack a ball around from time to time, you know?
First thing I did was look it up. Apparently, it’s down at 1503 San Pedro Ave here in San Antonio. This place is supposed to be a big deal for tennis in the city. I mean, they’ve got 22 hard courts, all with lights, so you can play even when it’s dark out. Plus, they’ve got a pro shop, which is pretty cool, even though I probably won’t be using it much.
So, I grabbed my old racket – yeah, it’s seen better days – and headed over there. I called the number 210-207-5357 for reservations. When I got there, man, the place was huge! Courts everywhere. And get this, they’re all hard courts, which I guess is the usual thing in the States. I’m more used to grass, to be honest, but hey, when in Rome, right?
I started hitting some balls, just getting a feel for the court. It was pretty nice, not gonna lie. The surface was smooth, and the bounce was consistent. They keep the courts in good shape, I’ll give them that. I even saw some folks getting lessons – they have year-round programs, it seems. They do lessons and camps, all sorts of stuff. Maybe I should sign up for one of those, who knows? I could definitely use some improvement.
Anyway, I played for a couple of hours. I did not use the lockers and showers because I live nearby. They even have a guardstand court. They open from like, 8:30 in the morning to 9 at night, with a break in the afternoon. Pretty good hours if you ask me.
They also hold some free clinics on Monday evenings. I might go to check out. It says “no racquet, no problem”. That’s good.

- I had a good time at McFarlin.
- It’s a solid place to play tennis, whether you’re a beginner like me or a seasoned player.
- I’ll probably be back, especially since it’s not too far from where I live.
- And who knows, maybe I’ll even get good enough to buy something from that pro shop one day!
