Want to play? Florida rugby union has the details!

So, today I’m gonna talk about my experience with the Florida Rugby Union. It all started when I wanted to get into a new sport, something exciting and physical. I’d heard about rugby, saw a few games, and thought, “Why not give it a shot?”

First, I had to figure out where to even begin. I found out that the Florida Rugby Union, or FRU, is the big boss for rugby in Florida. They’ve been around since 1974, started by six clubs, and now they’re part of USA Rugby. That’s like the main league for all rugby stuff in the States.

I learned that FRU has different divisions, like for men, women, and college folks. It’s a pretty big deal, with over 125,000 players in the US registered with USA Rugby as of 2016. Rugby is a 15-player game, and the goal is to get the ball behind the other team’s line. You can run with the ball or kick it, but if you’re running, you can only throw it backward. Kinda weird, but that’s the rule.

I went online and looked up some teams in Florida. I found this old and successful team, Miami Rugby Football Club. I thought, “Okay, this could be a good start.” I found the email for the head coach, a guy named Bill Clements. I sent him an email, telling him I was new and wanted to learn.

While waiting to hear back, I checked out the Florida Rugby Union website. They had all this info about championships and stuff. It was a bit overwhelming at first, but I started to get the hang of it. They also had info on how to become a member, which seemed like the next step.

  • Sent an email to the coach of Miami RFC.
  • Checked the Florida Rugby Union’s website for info.
  • Started to understand the basics of rugby.

  • Looked into becoming a member of the FRU.

Coach Bill got back to me, and we set up a time to meet. He explained a lot about the game, the team, and what to expect. It was a lot to take in, but he was patient and really passionate about rugby. He told me to come to a practice and see how things go.

So, I went to my first practice. It was intense! Lots of running, tackling, and learning the plays. Everyone was super supportive, even though I was stumbling around like a newborn deer. I got a few bumps and bruises, but it was so much fun.

I kept going to practices, learned more about the game, and started to feel like part of the team. It’s not just about playing; it’s like a whole community. We hang out after games, share stories, and just have a good time. I’m still learning a lot, but I’m really glad I decided to try rugby. It’s been an awesome experience, and I can’t wait to see where it takes me. If you’re thinking about trying a new sport, I’d say go for it. You might surprise yourself!
