Want Better Players? How to Build a Basketball Class to Develop Skills

Alright, listen up, y’all! We gonna talk about how to make them young’uns good at basketball, real good. Like, so good they could go pro and buy their old ma a new tractor, ya hear? So, we gotta build us a basketball class, somethin’ special.

First off, we gotta teach ’em the basics. No fancy stuff ‘fore they know how to bounce that ball. Dribbling, that’s the word. They gotta dribble like their life depends on it. Dribble, dribble, dribble, that’s all I gotta say. Gotta learn to go left, go right, go fast, go slow. Just like drivin’ a mule, gotta be in control. It don’t matter if they standin’ still or runnin’ like a chicken with its head cut off, they gotta keep that ball bouncin’. And no lookin’ at the ball all the time! Gotta learn to see the whole court, see where their teammates are, see where the other team is.

  • Dribbling is important.
  • Passing needs practice.
  • Shooting is key.

Then comes passin’. Can’t be hoggin’ that ball all day. Gotta learn to share, just like we learned in Sunday school. Chest pass, bounce pass, overhead pass… Heck, I don’t know all the fancy names, but they gotta learn to get that ball to their buddies without it gettin’ snatched away. Practice, practice, practice. That’s the only way to get good at anything. Like milkin’ a cow, the more you do it, the easier it gets. And them young’uns gotta practice hard if they wanna be the best

And shootin’! Oh, shootin’s important. Gotta put that ball in the hoop to win the game, ain’t that right? Gotta learn how to hold the ball right, how to aim, how to follow through. It ain’t just chuckin’ the ball up there and hopin’ for the best. It’s like plantin’ seeds, gotta do it right if you want somethin’ to grow. And tell them young’uns to get some good shoes. Them sneakers these days, they cost a pretty penny, but good shoes can help you jump higher and run faster. My grandson told me that, and them young’uns, they know everything these days.

Now, this ain’t just about runnin’ and jumpin’ and throwin’ the ball around. It’s about buildin’ character, too. Gotta teach them young’uns to be tough, both in body and in mind. Basketball ain’t for the faint of heart. They gotta learn to work as a team, to support each other, to never give up. Teamwork makes the dream work, that’s what they say, ain’t it? Gotta learn to listen to the coach, to respect their teammates, and to play fair. And if they lose a game, well, that ain’t the end of the world. Gotta learn from their mistakes, shake it off, and come back stronger next time. It is like life, sometimes you win, sometimes you lose.

We also gotta make sure they’re eatin’ right and gettin’ enough sleep. Can’t be runnin’ around on an empty stomach and no energy. Gotta fuel them bodies with good food, like them vegetables and fruits their mamas keep tellin’ them to eat. And sleep, that’s important too. Gotta rest them bones and muscles so they can be ready to go the next day. My old man used to say, “Early to bed, early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise”. I guess it works for them basketball players too, hehe.

And most importantly, we gotta make it fun! Nobody wants to do somethin’ that ain’t fun. Gotta keep them young’uns engaged, keep ’em excited, keep ’em comin’ back for more. Games, drills, competitions… Mix it up, keep it fresh. And don’t forget to celebrate the little victories. A good pass, a nice shot, a hustle play… Give ’em a pat on the back, tell ’em they did good. That’s how you build confidence, and confidence is key to success, in basketball and in life. So, there you have it. That’s how you build a basketball class that’ll turn them young’uns into real players. Now, go out there and make me proud!

And let them young’uns know, basketball is a game of skill but it’s more of a game of thinking. You gotta be smart, see the plays before they happen and be ready for anything. The best player is the one who can think the fastest and make the best choices not the fastest or the strongest. It’s all in here, in your head. So tell them to use it.
