So, I wanna tell you guys about this game I’ve been messing around with lately, it’s called “Golf Shiyouyo Kouryaku Pack”. I’d seen it around online and it looked kinda interesting, a golf game for the Dreamcast. Now, I’ve always had a soft spot for the Dreamcast, so many unique titles, you know?
First things first, I got my hands on the game. It wasn’t too hard to find, there are still a few copies floating around online. It’s developed and published by Bottom Up, and apparently, it’s basically the “Golf Shiyouyo” game bundled with a strategy guide, hence the “Kouryaku Pack” in the name. When I first got the package, I went straight for the disc. Turns out, the disc itself is no different from the one in the regular “Golf Shiyouyo” version. The only real changes are the name and the cover art, which is kinda cool.
I popped the disc into my Dreamcast. The familiar Dreamcast startup swirl and music, always loved those. Booting up the game, the menus were pretty straightforward. Nothing too fancy, but that’s part of the Dreamcast’s charm, right?
Getting into the gameplay itself, it’s your standard golf fare. You pick your golfer, choose your club, line up your shot, and swing away. I started with some practice rounds to get a feel for the controls. The power meter for the swing took a bit of getting used to. Too much power, and you risk slicing it into the rough. Too little, and you’ll be short of the green. The strategy guide is a thick little booklet that helps a lot.

I spent a good few hours just trying to master the basics. It’s not as easy as it looks. Chipping out of a sand trap? Forget about it! Took me ages to get that right.
The Grind
After getting the hang of the controls, I started playing through the tournament mode. This is where the real challenge begins. You’re competing against other AI golfers, and they’re pretty good. I had to really strategize my shots, taking into account the course layout, wind direction, and even the slope of the green.
I remember this one hole, a par 5 with a huge water hazard right in the middle of the fairway. I tried to play it safe and lay up short of the water, but I ended up in the rough. Took me three shots just to get back on the fairway! Ended up with a double bogey on that hole. I did find that the game’s pretty forgiving, though. Even if you mess up a hole, you can usually make up for it on the next one.
I’m still working my way through the tournament mode. It’s a tough challenge, but it’s also a lot of fun. This “Golf Shiyouyo Kouryaku Pack”, it’s a hidden gem on the Dreamcast. If you’re a fan of golf games, or just looking for something different to play on your Dreamcast, I’d definitely recommend checking it out. It’s a solid golf sim with a lot of replay value. You’ll find yourself coming back to it again and again, just to try and improve your score. I’m glad I picked it up. A great addition to my Dreamcast library, for sure!
