I saw some of it on that there telly box the other day. My grandson, he’s always fiddlin’ with it. He says it’s the “world wide web” or somethin’. Anyways, I saw these women, big and strong, slammin’ into each other. Lord have mercy! They ain’t afraid of nothin’, I tell ya.

Someone was yappin’ on the telly, said somethin’ about how far women’s sports has come. Said it was a “beautifully written report,” but I wouldn’t know nothin’ about that. Sounded fancy though. But I get it. Things used to be different. Girls were supposed to be all sugar and spice, not bruises and broken noses. But these gals, they ain’t havin’ none of that. They’re out there makin’ a name for themselves, and good on ’em, I say.
Then there was this other fella, a doctor or somethin’, talkin’ on the radio, my grandson listens to all sorts of things on that little box he carries around. The doctor was gabbing about the “sociology of sport.” Now, I ain’t got a lick of sense what that means, but he was sayin’ that women’s rugby is changin’ things, showin’ everyone that women can do anything they set their minds to. And I reckon he’s right. You see these gals, they ain’t just playin’ a game. They’re showin’ the world what they’re made of.
I heard a story about one of them players, Poppy somethin’ or other. They said she went all the way to the Rugby World Cup in 2022. Imagine that! A young gal, travelin’ the world, playin’ rugby. My grandma, she would’ve fainted dead away if she’d seen somethin’ like that. Back then, women were lucky to get out of the house, let alone playin’ rugby in some far-off land. But this Poppy girl, she’s a fighter. She and all them other gals are fightin’ for somethin’ more than just a win on the field. They’re fightin’ for respect, for equality, for a chance to show the world what they can do.
Someone wrote a book about it, they called it “Game On” or somethin’. Said it was a “celebration” and a “manifesto.” Sounded highfalutin to me. But it’s about them women, the ones who are breakin’ down barriers and makin’ it easier for the next generation. And that’s important, ain’t it? We gotta make sure these young girls comin’ up have the same opportunities as the boys. They deserve it. They earned it. They fought for it.
This rugby, it ain’t just about throwin’ a ball around. It’s about teamwork, about grit, about never givin’ up. And these women, they got that in spades. They’re tough, they’re determined, and they’re not afraid to get their hands dirty. They’re an inspiration, I tell ya. Even an old lady like me can see that.
And let me tell ya somethin’ else, this great britain women’s rugby is gettin’ bigger and bigger. More and more people are watchin’ it, cheerin’ for it, supportin’ it. And that’s a good thing. It shows the world that women are strong, that they’re capable, and that they deserve to be taken seriously. They are playin’ their hearts out and that is something to see.
So, if you get a chance, turn on the telly and watch these women play. You might be surprised at what you see. You might even find yourself cheerin’ along. Because these gals, they ain’t just playin’ rugby. They’re makin’ history.
And you know, back in my day, women, well, we mostly stayed home. Cooked, cleaned, looked after the kids. But times are changin’, and that’s a good thing, I reckon. These rugby gals, they’re showin’ the young’uns that anything is possible. And that’s a message worth hearin’, no matter how old you are.
Now, I don’t know all the fancy words they use to talk about this stuff. But I know what I see. And what I see is a bunch of strong, determined women who are makin’ a difference. And that’s somethin’ to be proud of, ain’t it?
So yeah, this great britain women’s rugby, it’s somethin’ special. It’s more than just a game. It’s a sign of progress. It’s a symbol of hope. And it’s somethin’ that I, for one, am mighty glad to see.
