Alright, let’s talk about these top flight golf clubs. Ya know, the ones them fancy folks use. I ain’t no expert, mind you, just seen a thing or two. My old man, he used to whack balls with sticks he found in the woods, but these here clubs, they somethin’ else.
First off, they got these “drivers,” big ol’ things, look like you could beat a rug with ’em. Folks say they make the ball go a country mile. I dunno ’bout all that, but they sure are shiny. Heard tell these “Top Flite XL” ones are supposed to be extra long. Longer than what, I ain’t sure. Seems to me a stick’s a stick, but what do I know? They say the driver in that set is forty-four and a half inches long. That’s a lot of inches, I reckon. Sounds like a lot of work to swing somethin’ that big. My old man just used whatever branch he could find, never measured nothin’.
Then you got these irons. Skinny little things, numbered and all. Six iron, seven iron, all the way up. Confusin’ if you ask me. The fella at the store said a six iron is thirty-seven and a half inches, which I guess is normal. Normal for who? Not for my old man, that’s for sure. He just had his one stick, and he made it work. These irons, though, they say they’re for hittin’ the ball closer to the hole. Closer the better, I always say. Ain’t no use hittin’ it far if you can’t find it again.
- Drivers: Big and for hittin’ far. Supposed to be extra long, but I ain’t seen it myself.
- Irons: Skinny and for hittin’ close. Got numbers, but I can’t keep ‘em straight.
Now, I heard some folks talkin’ ‘bout how these clubs are “complimentary” to use durin’ a game. Complimentary? Sounds like they givin’ ‘em away! But I reckon they just mean you get to use ‘em when you pay to play. Nothin’s free in this world, that’s for sure.
Seen some kids usin’ these clubs too. Little tykes, barely bigger than the bags they carryin’. But they swingin’ them clubs like they born with ‘em. Guess it’s like anything, start ‘em young and they’ll figure it out. My old man, he didn’t start young, but he sure could hit that ball. Not pretty, mind you, but it went where he wanted it to.
They got all sorts of names for these clubs, too. Top Flite, Maxfli, Softfli… Sounds like a bunch of gibberish to me. But I guess it matters to some folks. They got Tiger Woods usin’ these things, or so they say. He must be good, seein’ as how much they talk about him. I ain’t never seen him play, but if he’s usin’ these clubs, they must be somethin’ special.
And these stores, they got walls full of ‘em. Dick’s Sporting Goods, they call it. Never been inside, but I seen it from the road. Looks like they got enough clubs in there to arm a small army. Makes you wonder why a fella needs so many sticks just to hit a little ball. My old man just needed one, and he got along just fine. Though, maybe if he had all these fancy sticks, he coulda hit that ball even further. Who knows?
Anyways, that’s all I know about these top flight golf clubs. They shiny, they got numbers, and they cost a pretty penny, I bet. But if you like hittin’ little balls around a big field, I guess they’re just the ticket. Me? I’ll stick to watchin’ from the sidelines. Less walkin’, that’s for sure.
So, what do you really need to know about these clubs? Well, they say some are longer and help you hit farther, and some are for those short shots to get on the green. They come in sets, but I figure you just need a couple good ones, not a whole wall full of ‘em. And if you ain’t a pro, don’t worry too much about all the fancy names and numbers. Just get out there and swing! That’s what my old man always said, “Just swing the darn thing!” He never had no fancy clubs, but he sure had fun.
And one more thing, remember that “complimentary” thing? It means you can use them when you are playing at a course but, It don’t mean free, no siree. You still gotta pay to play, and those clubs probably cost a fortune. So, take care of ‘em if you get your hands on some. Don’t go throwin’ ‘em around like my old man did with his stick. He probably coulda used some of these “top flight” clubs, but then again, maybe he wouldn’t have wanted them. He liked things simple.
