Okay, so I’ve been meaning to get into rugby for a while now, but it’s kinda confusing with all these different types. I did some digging around and wanted to share what I found. Hopefully, this helps someone else who’s in the same boat as me.
First off, I found out that the most common type is something called Rugby Union. Apparently, it’s the one everyone watches, like, 400 million viewers on TV every year! I guess that’s why it’s the first one that pops up when you search for “rugby.”
-
Rugby Fifteens: This is the classic version with 15 players on each side. I tried watching a game, and it’s pretty intense with all the tackling and running. Seems like the most physically demanding of all the types.
-
Rugby Sevens: So this one is way faster. Only seven players per team, and each half is just seven minutes long. I saw it became an Olympic sport in 2016, which is pretty cool. I watched a few clips, and it’s crazy how much they run in such a short time.
Rugby Union
Then there’s Rugby League, which apparently used to be the same as Rugby Union way back in the day. The main thing I saw, is that the rules are a bit different to make it faster and, I guess, more exciting to watch. There are 13 players on each side.
-
Touch Rugby: This seems like a good way to start playing without getting totally wrecked. It’s a gentle, minimal contact version of the sport played by people of all ages and skill levels. As the name implies, players touch rather than tackle each other.
-
Beach Rugby: This sounds like fun, playing rugby on the sand. It is a much faster game, with fewer players and simplified rules. It is a popular format for summer tournaments.
-
Rugby Tens and Twelves: This is kind of a mix between the fifteens and sevens versions, with 10 or 12 players per team. I’m guessing it’s for when you want something in between the full-on intensity of fifteens and the speed of sevens.
Other Types of Rugby
Honestly, it’s still a lot to take in. I started watching some Rugby Fifteens matches, but maybe I’ll try Sevens next, since it’s shorter and seems easier to follow for a newbie like me. It’s a wild sport, no matter which type you watch. I’m still figuring it all out, but it’s been a fun ride so far! I’ll keep you guys updated on my rugby journey!
