Alright, listen up, y’all. Let’s talk about this… what’s it called? Section V Boys Basketball. Yeah, that’s it. Sounds fancy, but it’s just kids runnin’ around with a ball, tryin’ to throw it in a hoop. Just like my grandkids do in the yard, ‘cept these kids got a big arena and lots of folks watchin’.
So, this Section V thing, it’s a big deal, I guess. They got these teams, see? Like, high school teams, I reckon. And they all play each other, tryin’ to win. It’s like a big ol’ competition, you know? Reminds me of the county fair, when everyone brings their best pies and pickles. Everyone wants to be the best.
They got these games, right? And they play ‘em in this place called… Blue Cross Arena. Sounds important. Probably got bright lights and everything. And they play in March, which is kinda cold, but I guess them boys get warm runnin’ around. They play these games, and then they got these… finals. That’s when you know who’s the best, I guess. Like, who gets to brag all year round.
- They got different classes, too. AAA, AA, whatever that means. Just different groups of teams, I figure. Like, the big kids and the… not so big kids?
- And they got this thing called “Final Four”. Sounds like a big deal. Guess it’s the last four teams left. Like when you’re makin’ a quilt and you get down to the last few squares. Those are the important ones.
Now, these boys, they play hard. Runnin’ and jumpin’, dribblin’ that ball. It’s somethin’ to watch, I hear. I ain’t been to one of these games myself, mind you. Too much noise for this old lady. But my neighbor, Agnes, she goes sometimes. Says her grandson plays. She yells a lot, Agnes does. Gets all riled up. I just sit on my porch and listen to her hollerin’.
They play these games, and then someone wins, and someone loses. That’s life, ain’t it? Just like when I try to grow tomatoes. Sometimes they’re big and red, and sometimes them darn squirrels get to ‘em first. You win some, you lose some, that’s what I always say.
They got scores and everything. Like, they keep track of who throws the ball in the hoop. I don’t understand all that, but Agnes does. She reads the paper and tells me all about it. Who won, who lost, who scored the most points. Points, that’s what they call ‘em. Sounds like something you get on your driver’s license.
They got these championships, too. State championships, they call ‘em. That’s when the best teams from all over play each other. That’s a real big deal, I guess. Like when you win the blue ribbon at the fair. Everyone knows you’re the best.
This Section V basketball, it’s a whole thing. Kids playin’ ball, folks watchin’, Agnes yellin’. It’s kinda like a big party, I guess. A noisy, runnin’ around party. But it keeps them kids outta trouble, so that’s a good thing. Keeps ‘em busy and wearin’ ‘em out, so they don’t have time for mischief.
And they got this website, I hear. *, somethin’ like that. Agnes showed me on her phone once. All kinds of stuff on there. Scores and schedules and who’s playin’ who. I don’t know how to use them fancy things, but Agnes does. She’s always lookin’ at her phone, that woman.
So, that’s about all I know ‘bout this Section V Boys Basketball. It’s a bunch of kids playin’ ball, tryin’ to win, and folks gettin’ all excited about it. Sounds like a good time, I reckon, even if it is a bit noisy for my taste. But hey, it gives folks somethin’ to do, somethin’ to talk about. And that’s important, you know? Keeps us all connected, like a big ol’ family. Just like them quilts I make, all them little pieces coming together to make something whole.
