Well, let me tell ya ’bout this Sandhill Crane Golf place, ya know? It ain’t like no farm field, that’s for sure. Folks say it’s a real fancy golf course, one of them “championship” ones. Eighteen holes, they got. That’s a lot of holes, if ya ask me. More holes than my old sieve has, I reckon.
They say it’s the only golf place in Florida where ya play through them swampy parts, what they call “wetlands” and “sloughs”. Sounds buggy to me, all them skeeters and such. But folks seem to like it. Says it’s purdy, all them trees and tall birds. Sandhill cranes, they call ’em. Big ol’ birds, stand taller than my grandson, they do. Guess that’s why they named the place after ’em.
Now, I ain’t never played no golf myself. Seems like a waste of good walkin’ time to me. But folks who do it, they say it’s about hittin’ a little ball with a stick, tryin’ to get it in a hole. Sounds easy enough, but they got all sorts of rules and clubs and whatnots. More complicated than makin’ biscuits, that’s for sure.
- Course stuff: They got all this information ’bout the course, like how much it costs to play, how to get there, and even what the weather’s gonna be like. They even tell ya ’bout places to sleep nearby, in case you get tired from all that golfin’.
- Course map: And they got this here map, shows ya every hole. Like a bird’s eye view, they say. Shows ya how far ya gotta hit the ball and all. Fancy stuff, I tell ya.
- Tee times and prices: And get this, the price to play ain’t always the same. They call it “dynamic pricing,” which just means it changes dependin’ on how many folks wanna play. More folks, more money, I reckon. And ya gotta book a time to play, called a “tee time.” Don’t just show up whenever ya feel like it, I guess.
Now, if you’re gonna play this golf game, they say ya gotta get there early. Like an hour early! Can ya believe that? What in the world would ya do for a whole hour? Well, they say ya gotta practice. Puttin’ and chippin’, they call it. Then hittin’ balls on the “range,” whatever that is. Warm up your muscles, they say. Stretchy-like. Seems like a lot of work for just hittin’ a little ball.
And then, they say ya gotta plan your game. Figure out how many times you’re gonna hit the ball on each hole. Try to get it in the hole in two hits after ya get on the green, they say. That green must be somethin’ special, all that talk about it. Sounds like a whole lotta thinkin’ to me. I’d rather be thinkin’ ’bout what to cook for supper.
Anyways, this Sandhill Crane Golf place seems to be a big deal. Folks come from all over to play there, I hear. Palm Beach Gardens, that’s where it is. Sounds fancy, like somethin’ out of a picture book. If you like hittin’ little balls with sticks, I guess it’s the place to be. Me? I’ll stick to my garden and my chickens. At least I know what I’m doin’ there. But if golf is your thing, this place sounds alright. Just watch out for them skeeters and crane birds.
Sandhill Crane Golf Club, that’s what the fancy folks call it. It’s got all them 18 holes, and it stretches out a long ways, 6,500 yards they say. That’s a mighty long walk, even without chasin’ a little white ball around. And them pine trees, they’re everywhere. Reminds me a bit of the woods back home, except these are all lined up nice and pretty. And they keep it real neat, this golf place. No weeds or nothin’. Someone’s workin’ hard to keep it that way, that’s for sure.
So, if you’re ever in Palm Beach Gardens and you got a hankerin’ to swing a stick at a little ball, you might wanna check out this Sandhill Crane Golf thing. Just remember to bring your bug spray and your thinkin’ cap. And maybe a good pair of walkin’ shoes, ’cause 6,500 yards is a long way, no matter how ya slice it.
