Remembering the 1997 Little Cypress Mauriceville High School Football Team

Well, let me tell ya ’bout them Little Cypress-Mauriceville High School Bears, way back in 1997. It was somethin’ else, I tell ya. Them boys, they played their hearts out, real gritty-like.

The ’97 Season – A Real Barn Burner

Now, I ain’t no fancy sports writer, but I remember folks talkin’ ’bout that ’97 season like it was yesterday. They said it was a real barn burner, lots of close games and tough plays. Heard tell they beat Whitehouse 20-7, that was a big one. Folks ’round here were real proud. And that coach, David Williams, he sure knew how to get them boys movin’.

The Bears, they were tough as nails. They played hard, every game. Folks in the stands, they’d be yellin’ and cheerin’, win or lose. It was a real community thing, you know? Everybody comin’ together to support them boys. I remember seein’ little kids all dressed up in blue and gold, just like their mamas and daddies.

More Than Just a Game

  • It wasn’t just ’bout winnin’, though. It was ’bout the spirit, the fight in them boys.
  • They played with pride, for the school, for the town, for themselves.
  • That’s what mattered most, I reckon.

Heard they even won somethin’ called a Regional Semifinal Championship. Don’t rightly know what all that means, but folks were sure happy about it. It was a big deal, I guess. They played Columbia in 2021 and won too, 42-21. But that was Eric Peevey’s time. Different coach, different boys, but same Bear spirit, I reckon.

The Bears Through the Years

Now, they got this fella, Pete Mota, folks say he’s been with the Bears forever. Seen ‘em through thick and thin. He’s like part of the team, they say. Reminds me of some of the old timers ‘round here, always there, always supportin’ the young’uns.

And they talk ’bout the Bears clawin’ their way to a district title in 1994, first one in thirty years, they said. Beat them Lumberton Raiders, 35-25. That musta been somethin’ to see. I bet the whole town was celebratin’ that night. Thirty years is a long time, you know?

Football – A Town’s Heartbeat

They got this thing called MaxPreps, where you can see all the scores and stuff. I don’t mess with that internet stuff much, but my grandkids, they’re always lookin’ at it. They say you can find scores and videos and all sorts of things ‘bout the Bears. It’s a different world now, I tell ya.

But some things don’t change. The love for the game, the pride in the team, the way the whole town comes together on Friday nights. That’s still the same, just like it was back in ’97.

Remembering the ’97 Team

I hear tell that some teams are remembered for a few star players, but that ’97 team, they were remembered for bein’ a team. They worked together, they fought together, they won together. That’s somethin’ special, ain’t it?

They talk ’bout the Bears playin’ on Friday nights, October 13th, 2023 even. Folks still goin’ to the games, still cheerin’. It’s like a tradition, passed down from one generation to the next. And that, I reckon, is somethin’ to be proud of.

So, yeah, that’s what I remember ‘bout them Little Cypress-Mauriceville High School Bears. They weren’t just a football team, they were part of the heart and soul of this town. And that’s somethin’ that’ll never change, no matter how many years go by.

The Spirit Lives On

It ain’t just ’bout the wins and losses, see? It’s about teachin’ them young’uns ’bout hard work, ’bout stickin’ together, ’bout never givin’ up. That’s what football does, and that’s why it’s so important to folks ’round here. And that’s what I remember most about that ‘97 team – they never gave up. They played their hearts out, every single game.

And even though I can’t always get to the games anymore, I still hear ’bout them Bears. And I still feel that same pride, that same excitement, that I felt way back in ’97. It’s a part of me, a part of this town, and it always will be.
