Rabbit Nesting Box: Easy Guide for Happy Bunnies!

Okay, so I wanted to share my little project of making a rabbit nesting box. It was quite an experience, and I think it turned out pretty well, all things considered.

I started this whole thing because, well, my rabbits were expecting, and I needed to get a nesting box sorted for them. I’m no carpenter, but how hard could it be, right? So, I gathered some materials. I had some old wood lying around in the garage – mostly plywood scraps, some screws, and a few nails. I figured, why not put them to good use?

First, I sketched out a rough plan. I mean, it wasn’t anything fancy, just a basic box shape. I measured out the pieces, trying to make sure they would fit together. The dimensions, I just eyeballed them, to be honest. I cut the wood with a hand saw I found in my toolbox. It took a while, and my arms were pretty tired by the end of it, but I managed to get all the pieces cut.

Next, I started assembling the box. This was the tricky part. I used screws for the most part because they seemed more secure, but I hammered in a few nails here and there when the screws were giving me a hard time. It wasn’t perfect, a bit wonky in places, but it was starting to look like a box.

  • Gathered materials: plywood, screws, nails
  • Sketched a plan and measured the pieces
  • Cut the wood with a hand saw
  • Assembled the box using screws and nails

Once the box was built, I needed to think about the bedding. I read somewhere that straw is good, but I only had hay on hand. So, I filled the box with a generous amount of hay. It looked cozy enough, I guess. I also tossed in some shredded newspaper, and I remembered reading that you can use cloth strips, so I added a few of those too. I even threw in some dryer lint because why not? It’s all about making it comfortable for the momma rabbit, right?

Finally, I placed the nesting box in the rabbit hutch. I watched as the expectant mother explored her new nest. She seemed to approve, sniffing around and rearranging the hay a bit. It was a relief to see her settle in.

My Takeaways

Looking back, it wasn’t as easy as I thought it would be, but it was definitely a rewarding experience. I learned a lot about, well, making do with what you have and that it’s okay if things aren’t perfect. The important thing is that the rabbits have a safe and comfortable place for their babies. Plus, I got to use some of that old wood that was just collecting dust. Would I do it again? Probably, but maybe next time I’ll invest in some better tools and maybe watch a tutorial or two beforehand!
