Need Help With Rugby Lifting? Heres How to Get it Right.

Okay, so yesterday, I got this crazy idea to work on my rugby lifting technique. You know, the whole grabbing a guy by the shorts and jersey, hoisting him up so he can catch the ball thing? I figured, why not give it a shot, right?

First off, I needed someone to lift. Luckily, my buddy John was around and more than happy to be my human crane for the day. We started with the basics. I squatted down, got a good grip on John’s shorts and jersey, and tried to lift. Let me tell you, it’s not as easy as it looks. We went through a few awkward attempts, with me wobbling and John nearly tipping over. It was a mess, but a hilarious one.

We watched a few videos online, trying to figure out what we were doing wrong. Apparently, it’s all about timing and coordination. I needed to drive up with my legs, keeping my back straight, while John had to jump at just the right moment. We tried again, focusing on these points. We tried many times, but still a little hard.

After a lot of trial and error, and a few breaks to catch our breath, we started to get the hang of it. I could feel the difference when I used my legs more and kept my back straight. John’s jumps got more confident, and we started to look like a somewhat functional lifting duo.

  • Get a good grip: Shorts and jersey, that’s your anchor.
  • Squat low: It’s all about the legs, not your back.
  • Timing is everything: Lifter and jumper need to be in sync.
  • Drive up: Use those leg muscles to get your mate airborne.

By the end of the day, we weren’t exactly ready for the Rugby World Cup, but we had made some serious progress. I could actually lift John up, and he could stay in the air for a couple of seconds. We even managed to simulate catching a ball a few times. It felt awesome, like we had unlocked a new level of physical coordination. We did it!

It was a day full of laughs, a few near-falls, and a whole lot of learning. It’s way more fun than just hitting the gym, and you get a good workout too. I’m definitely going to keep practicing this, and who knows, maybe one day you’ll see me and John on the rugby field, pulling off some epic lifts.
