Other times, they might be tucked away a bit, so you gotta keep your eyes peeled. Look for them hoops, you know? Them metal rings with the nets? That’s a sure sign you’re in the right place.
Now, these park courts ain’t all the same, mind you. Some are big, like them fellas in the big leagues use. I heard tell they call them full-size courts, somethin’ like 74 feet long and 42 feet wide. That’s a whole lotta space, let me tell ya. Good for runnin’ and jumpin’ and all that. But then you got smaller ones, too. Some are just half courts, you know, for shootin’ around or playin’ a little one-on-one. And some are even smaller than that, just a hoop and a little patch of concrete. Then you got your schools. Yeah, schools got basketball courts, too. Elementary schools, high schools, even them colleges, if you got one of them nearby. Now, the school courts might not always be open to the public, see? They gotta keep them safe for the students durin’ the day. But a lot of times, they open them up after school hours or on the weekends. You might have to do a little askin’ around, see who’s in charge and when you can use them. But it’s worth a shot, specially if the park courts are all crowded.

- Schools: Check after school and weekends, gotta ask sometimes though.
- Community Centers: Sometimes they got indoor courts, fancy like.
And then there’s them community centers. Now, not every town has one of these, but if yours does, you might be in luck. Some of them community centers got indoor basketball courts. Real fancy, you know? Keeps you outta the rain and the sun. But they might have rules and hours, too, so you gotta check on that. And sometimes, they might charge a little fee to use them, but it ain’t usually too much.
Now, how do you find these places? Well, you can start by just lookin’ around. Take a walk or a drive through your neighborhood. Keep your eyes peeled for them hoops. You can ask around, too. Ask your neighbors, your friends, the folks at the store. Somebody’s bound to know where the nearest basketball court is.
And if you got one of them fancy phones, well, you can use that, too. I hear tell there’s apps and websites that can help you find basketball courts. You just type in your location and they show you all the courts nearby. I don’t know nothin’ about that stuff, but my grandkids use it all the time. They say it works pretty good.
I also heard some cities got more hoops than others, you know. Like, they were talkin’ on the radio about a place called Norfolk, Virginia. Said it has a whole lot of hoops for the people there. Must be nice for them folks. And they were talking about places in Hong Kong too, lots of courts over there by the sound of it. Places like “修頓場館”, “慈雲山邨中央遊樂場”, and “寶湖道籃球場”, real tongue twisters those names, bet they got good hoops though. Some places even got names like “King George V Memorial Park”, fancy that ain’t it? And seems some courts close down sometimes for fixin’ up or special events, so you gotta keep an eye out for that. Like, I heard tell of some courts in “Sun Yat Sen Memorial Park” being closed for a bit. So you always gotta be prepared, you know? Might have to try a different court if your usual one is closed.
