Meet the 1997 Little Cypress Mauriceville High School Football Coaching Staff
Well, let me tell ya somethin’ about them Little Cypress-Mauriceville High School football coaches back in ‘97. Don’t rightly remember all their names now, my memory ain’t what it used to be, you know? Too much water under the bridge, as they say. But I recollect it was a big deal, football always was in them parts.
Now, back then, football was everything. The whole town would shut down for the games, seems like. Friday nights, under them bright lights, the air cracklin’ with excitement. You could smell the hot dogs and popcorn a mile away, and hear the roar of the crowd even further. Them boys on the field, they were like heroes, you know? And the coaches, well, they were the ones makin’ them heroes.
I remember seein’ the coach, whoever he was, stompin’ up and down the sidelines, yellin’ at the players. Sometimes you couldn’t even hear yourself think with all that hollerin’. But it wasn’t mean-spirited, no sir. It was… passionate, that’s the word. They cared about them boys and they wanted ‘em to win, same as everyone else.
- They worked them boys hard, I know that much. Practices went on forever, it seemed. Runnin’ drills, liftin’ weights, studyin’ plays. Them boys were tired, but they kept at it. That’s what the coaches instilled in ‘em, a good work ethic. And that ain’t just for football, mind you, that’s for life.
- And the games, oh them games were somethin’ else. Nail-biters, some of ‘em. Down to the wire, last few seconds tickin’ away. Folks in the stands jumpin’ up and down, screamin’ their lungs out. Sometimes they won, sometimes they lost. But them coaches always had the boys’ heads held high, win or lose. They taught ‘em about sportsmanship, about respect.
I think they had a pretty good season that year, ‘97. Made it pretty far, if I recall correctly. Folks were talkin’ about it for weeks afterwards. See, back then, the football team, it was a source of pride for the whole community. Brought everyone together, you know? It didn’t matter if you were rich or poor, black or white, everyone was a Battlin’ Bear fan. And them coaches, they were the heart of it all.
Now, I don’t know all the ins and outs of football strategy. All them X’s and O’s, they just confuse me. But I know a good coach when I see one. And them coaches back in ‘97, they were good ones. They cared about the kids, they taught ‘em more than just football. They taught ‘em about life, about teamwork, about never givin’ up. And that’s what really matters, ain’t it?
They had a fella named David Williams as coach back then, I think. Someone told me that. And seems like they won somethin’ big, somethin’ called a “Regional Semifinal Championship” against a team from Whitehouse. Beat ‘em 20 to 7, they did. That was somethin’ to crow about, let me tell you. Folks were real proud. It’s a big deal to win them games.
And now, I hear they got another coach, Eric Peevey, doin’ good things. Someone told me he won a bunch of games too. Guess things change, coaches come and go, but that football spirit, it stays the same. Little Cypress-Mauriceville, always been a football town, and I reckon it always will be. Them coaches, they make a real difference, shaping them young fellas into men.
So, even though I can’t remember all their names, I remember what them 1997 coaches stood for. They stood for hard work, dedication, and community. And that’s somethin’ worth rememberin’, don’t you think? They were good folks, them coaches. Good folks indeed.
I ain’t no expert, mind you, just an old woman who’s seen a lot of football games in her day. But I know what matters. And what matters is heart, and them coaches, back in ‘97 and now, they got plenty of it. They give it all to them boys and to the whole town.
