Marlette Michigan High School Football: A Look at Wins Through the Years
Alright, let’s talk about them Marlette Michigan high school football wins, you know, the games them young’uns play. I don’t know much about fancy football stuff, but I can tell you a thing or two about winnin’ and losin’.
Marlette Red Raiders Football, they call ’em. Sounds tough, right? Well, sometimes they are, sometimes they ain’t. I seen ’em play good, and I seen ’em play not so good. That’s just how it goes, you win some, you lose some.
I heard tell they got a coach, a fella named Tom Saylor, they say he’s real good. They say he got them boys winnin’ and winnin’, somethin’ like seventy-two games in a row! Can you believe that? Seventy-two! That’s a whole lotta winnin’, more than any other school back then. Folks was sayin’ somethin’ about Jefferson City, Missouri, but Marlette, they beat ’em. That’s somethin’, ain’t it? Folks was talkin’ about that for a long time, real proud of them boys.
Now, I ain’t sure about all them years, but I know they play games every year. Fall comes around, leaves start fallin’, and them boys start throwin’ that there football. They run around, they tackle each other, and sometimes they score. That’s how you win, see? You gotta score more than the other team. Simple as that. Football scores, they call it. They keep track of all them scores, who won, who lost, all that stuff. They even got websites and things now, where you can see all the scores and schedules. Kids these days, always on their phones.
- They got this thing called the MHSAA, Michigan somethin’ somethin’ Athletic Association. I reckon they’re the ones who make the rules and keep things organized. They got all sorts of rules, I tell ya. Can’t do this, can’t do that. Keeps them boys in line, I guess.
- And they got this GTC-E thing too, a conference or somethin’. Seems like them Marlette boys play other schools in that conference. Win some, lose some, just like I said.
They got a place, a big field, where they play. Some folks say it’s a real nice field, one of the best in Michigan. Ithaca Community Stadium, they say it’s even better. I ain’t never been to Ithaca, but I heard it’s nice. But Marlette’s field, that’s where our boys play. They got all them lines painted on it, and them goal posts at each end. That’s where they gotta get that ball, see? Over that line, between them posts.
I remember one time, they played this team, Detroit Cass Tech they called ’em. Big city boys, real tough. Marlette, they didn’t win that one. Got beat pretty good, I think. But that’s okay, you can’t win ’em all. Sometimes you gotta lose to learn how to win, that’s what my old man used to say. That was a MHSAA Division 1 final game, a big deal they said. Them Detroit boys, they won the state title, first time since 2016 or somethin’. Folks were talkin’ about that for a while.
They got all kinds of news about the team, you know. Newspapers, websites, even folks talkin’ at the diner. Marlette high school football news, they call it. They talk about the games, the players, the coaches, everything. They got schedules, too, tells you when they’re gonna play and who they’re gonna play. And they got rosters, lists of all the players. Young fellas, mostly. And they got rankings, tells you who’s good and who’s not so good. And they even keep track of stats, you know, how many touchdowns, how many yards, all that stuff. Too much for my old brain to keep up with, I tell ya.
They also got cheerleaders, them girls what yell and jump around. They try to get the crowd all riled up, you know. “Go team go!” they yell. Sometimes it works, sometimes it don’t. They also got things like Marlette high school sports coverage. It ain’t just football, you know. They got basketball, baseball, all kinds of sports. Them young’uns got a lot of energy, gotta get it out somehow.
But football, that’s the big one, especially in the fall. Friday night lights, they call it. Whole town comes out to watch them boys play. It’s a real community thing, you know. Brings folks together. And when them Marlette boys win, well, it’s a good feelin’. Makes you proud, even if you don’t know nothin’ about football.
So yeah, that’s what I know about Marlette Michigan high school football. Wins, losses, good times, bad times. It’s all part of the game. And that game been going on for a long, long time, from what I hear. And them Red Raiders just keep playin’, year after year.
