Look at Football with Pictures: Best of the Game.

Alright, alright, let’s talk about this here… foot-ball, yeah, that’s what them city folks call it. I seen some pictures, you know, them shiny ones in the papers and on that telly-vision thingy. Lordy, them crowds! Big, big crowds, like a whole town gathered ’round for a barn raisin’, but bigger, way bigger. I seen one picture, looked like ants crawlin’ all over each other, they said it was some kinda cup final, way back when. Bolton, somethin’ or other, they won. Two to nothin’, they said. Two! Imagine that, all them folks watchin’ just for two points.

Then there’s this fella, Zinedine… Zin-e-dine, yeah, that’s it. Heard tell he was a real good player, but hot-headed, like my old rooster. This picture showed him headbuttin’ some other fella. Right in the chest, bam! Lord have mercy, I thought foot-ball was about kickin’ the ball, not heads. Guess them city boys play rough.

  • Now, I seen another picture, this goalie, he wasn’t usin’ his hands like they supposed to. Nope, he was usin’ his feet! Kickin’ the ball away, like a mule kickin’ flies. They said it was “too mainstream” to use hands. Mainstream? What in tarnation does that even mean? Sounds like somethin’ them fancy folks say.
  • And the pictures, oh the pictures! They got pictures of everything. Wide shots of the fields, looks like green carpets, bigger than my whole farm. Pictures of the fans, cheerin’ and hollerin’, faces all painted up like clowns. Even pictures of old-timey gear, them leather balls and funny lookin’ shoes. They say you can find thousands of these pictures online. Thousands! That’s more folks than live in our whole county.

They got all sorts of numbers too, these foot-ball folks. Yards somethin’, passer somethin’ else, and turn-overs. Sounds like a bakery exploded. I don’t understand none of it, but they say it makes the game more interestin’. Guess if you like countin’ things, it might be. Me? I prefer countin’ chickens.

And the games, they mean somethin’, you know. Like, some games decide if you get to keep playin’, some are just for bragging rights, like who’s the best rooster in the hen house. And some games, they’re against rivals. Rivals? That’s like when your neighbor’s dog keeps diggin’ up your garden, you just wanna give ’em a piece of your mind. That’s a rivalry.

I seen pictures of these rivalries, the crowds even crazier, the players even angrier. They say it adds to the excitement. Me, I get enough excitement chasin’ after runaway pigs. But, I gotta admit, them foot-ball pictures, they do tell a story. A story of sweat and cheers, of wins and losses, of headbutts and mule kicks. It’s a whole different world, that foot-ball world, but it sure is somethin’ to look at.

One thing’s for sure, whether it’s a muddy field or a fancy stadium, whether it’s a cup final or just some regular game, them pictures show one thing: people love their foot-ball. Love it like a farmer loves his land, or a mama loves her babies. It’s somethin’ special, somethin’ powerful. Even if I don’t rightly understand all the rules and numbers, I can see that much.

And the players, they’re like heroes, I reckon. Strong and fast, runnin’ and kickin’ and jumpin’. Some of them are small, some are big, some are skinny, some are built like brick houses. But they all got that fire in their eyes, that want to win, that want to be the best. It’s like watchin’ a bunch of young bulls fightin’ for the prize, only they’re fightin’ with a ball, not horns.

I tell you what, though, all that runnin’ around must make them tired. I bet they eat a whole lot after a game. Probably got tables piled high with food, just like a harvest feast. And the noise, the noise must be deafening. All them people screamin’ and cheerin’ and yellin’. I don’t think my old ears could handle it. But on them pictures, the noise don’t bother me none, I just look at them players and imagine what its like, all that hootin’ and hollerin.
