Little Cypress Mauriceville High 1997 Varsity Football Team: A Look Back at the Season
Well, let me tell ya ’bout them Little Cypress-Mauriceville High School Bears, the football team from back in ’97. Folks ’round here, they still talk about it sometimes. 1997, that was a year, yes sir.
Now, I ain’t no fancy sports writer or nothin’, but I remember them boys. They played hard, real hard. Every Friday night, the whole town would gather, you know, at that there stadium. We’d cheer and holler, even when them other teams were tough. Little Cypress-Mauriceville High, that’s our school, and them Bears, they were our pride and joy.
The 1997 Season, A Real Barn Burner
See, back in them days, football was everything. We didn’t have all these fancy phones and computers. Friday night lights, that was our entertainment. And them Bears, they gave us a show. I reckon that 1997 team, they were somethin’ special. They made it to the playoffs, ya know. That ain’t somethin’ that happens every year.
- Made Playoffs in 1997
- District Championship team
- 55th season played in history
I remember seein’ them boys runnin’ drills, even in the hot summer sun. Coach, he’d be yellin’, but them boys, they just kept goin’. Sweat drippin’ off ’em, but they didn’t complain. They knew what they had to do. They wanted to win, not just for themselves, but for the whole town. That’s just how it was back then.
The games, oh them games! Sometimes they won big, sometimes it was close, real nail-biters. I recall one game, against, uh, I think it was Lumberton. Them Lumberton boys, they were tough too. Scored a couple of touchdowns, they did. But our Bears, they fought back. They never gave up. That’s what I liked about ’em. Win or lose, they always gave it their all.
Players and Coaches, Good Folks All Around
Now, I can’t rightly remember all their names, too many years gone by. But I remember some faces. Joe Peevey, Dennis Vansa, Ed Dyer…I think they were some of the coaches or somethin’. Good men, they were. They cared about them boys, not just as football players, but as people. They taught ’em about teamwork, discipline, respect. Them’s important things, ya know.
And them players, they were just kids, really. But on that field, they were heroes. They played their hearts out every game. They made us proud. Little Cypress-Mauriceville, that’s a small place, but them boys, they put it on the map, at least for a little while.
More Than Just a Game
It wasn’t just about football, though. It was about community. See, them Friday night games, they brought us all together. Rich folks, poor folks, didn’t matter. We were all there, cheerin’ for the same team. We were all Bears. And that, that’s somethin’ special. Nowadays, things are different. Folks got their phones and their computers. They don’t come together like they used to. But back then, in ’97, it was different. It was a simpler time, maybe a better time.
Remembering the Legacy
So, if you ever hear someone talkin’ ’bout the Little Cypress-Mauriceville High School Bears, especially that 1997 team, you’ll know they were somethin’ special. They weren’t just a football team, they were a part of our lives. They gave us somethin’ to cheer for, somethin’ to be proud of. And that’s somethin’ that stays with ya, long after the lights go out and the cheering fades away.
Little Cypress-Mauriceville High… yep, them Bears, they sure could play. And that 1997 team, well, they were one for the books. They made history for our school and they made us all proud to be from Little Cypress-Mauriceville.
Folks still talk about it to this day. You go down to the store, or the diner, you’ll hear someone say, “Remember that 1997 team? Them boys were somethin’ else!” And you know what? They were right. They were something else. And I’m glad I was there to see it.
