Alright, y’all, let’s jaw about that there LCM varsity football team, way back in ’96. Don’t rightly know where to start, but it was a season, lemme tell ya. A real barn burner of a season, some good, some bad, just like life, I reckon.
The ’96 Crew: Who Were Them Boys?
Now, I ain’t got no fancy stats sheet or nothin’, but them boys on the ’96 team, they were somethin’ else. We had all sorts, big ‘uns, small ‘uns, fast ‘uns, and some that were just plain tough as nails. You know, the kind that’d eat dirt and spit nails. That Little Cypress-Mauriceville crew, yeah, they were the talk of the town. Folks ’round here, they still remember them boys.
- Big Johnny, he was our quarterback, threw that ball like a rocket, I tell ya. Sometimes it went where it was supposed to, sometimes it didn’t, but he sure had an arm on him.
- Little Mikey, fast as a rabbit, he was our running back. That boy could dodge and weave like nobody’s business. Hard to catch, he was.
- Then there was Big Joe, played on the line. Strong as an ox, that one. Nobody got past Big Joe without a fight. He was the kinda fella you wanted on your side in a scrap, that’s for sure.
They say this here ’96 team, it’s still stuck in folks’ heads, you know? Like one of them old songs you can’t get outta your head. They made some memories, that’s for sure. Some good, some not so good, but memories all the same.
The Games: Wins, Losses, and Everything In Between
Now, I can’t rightly recall every single game, you know, my memory ain’t what it used to be. But I remember some of them real nail-biters. We had some games where we just stomped the other team, flat out. Then we had some where we got stomped ourselves. That’s football for ya, ain’t it? One day you’re on top, the next you’re scrapin’ the bottom of the barrel.
I remember one game in particular, it was rainin’ cats and dogs. Mud everywhere, couldn’t hardly see nothin’. But them boys, they kept on fightin’, slippin’ and slidin’ all over the place. We won that game by a hair, I tell ya, just barely squeaked by. But a win’s a win, no matter how ya get it.
And then there was that game against them city slickers from… well, I don’t rightly remember the name of the town, but they were all fancy and had them shiny helmets. We lost that one, bad. But our boys, they didn’t give up, even when it was clear we were beat. They played hard right to the very end. That’s what I liked about them, they had grit.
More Than Just a Game, I Reckon
You know, football, it ain’t just about winnin’ and losin’. It’s about more than that. It’s about teamwork, about learnin’ to work together, about pickin’ yourself up when you get knocked down. It’s about community, too. Folks comin’ together on a Friday night, cheerin’ on their team. It’s somethin’ special, it really is. Them boys on the ’96 team, they learned a lot that season, on and off the field. They learned about life, about hardship, about how to be good men, I reckon.
Coach Peevey and His 30 Wins
And let’s not forget Coach Peevey! That man was something else. They said he got his 30th win that year, a real milestone, you know? He was tough on them boys, but he cared about ‘em too. He pushed ‘em hard, made ‘em better players, better people. He was one of the greats, no doubt about it. Made history at LCM, he did.
Still Talked About Today
Even now, all these years later, folks ‘round here still talk about that ’96 team. They remember the players, the games, the excitement. It’s like it was just yesterday. That team, them boys, they left their mark. They became a part of the town’s story, you know? And that’s somethin’ to be proud of, I reckon.
So yeah, that’s the story of the LCM varsity football team of ’96, as best as I can remember it. A bunch of good ol’ boys who played their hearts out, win or lose. They made us proud, they did. And that’s all that really matters in the end, ain’t it? Being proud of where you come from and the folks you share it with.
