Well, let me tell ya ’bout this football team, the LCM Bears, back in ’97. It was a real hootenanny, I tell ya! Them boys, they were somethin’ else. Varsity football, that’s the big leagues for them young’uns. Now, I ain’t no expert, mind you, but I seen my fair share of games back in the day.
The coach, can’t rightly recall his name now, but he was a tough fella. Made them boys run till they puked, near ’bout. But it was for their own good, see? Discipline, that’s what he called it. He whipped them into shape. He yelled a lot but you know those boys needed it to be good players.
- Running
- Throwing that ball
- Tacklin’
These were the things they did. It was real excitin’ to watch. Nowadays, they got all these fancy plays and whatnots. Back then, it was mostly runnin’ the ball and smashin’ into each other. Good ol’ fashioned football, that’s what it was.
The ’97 season, it had its ups and downs, like a rollercoaster ride. Some games they won, some they lost. But them boys, they never gave up. They fought tooth and nail, every single game. They’d get bruised and battered. Sometimes they even got their eyes blackened. But they’d keep playin’!
I remember one game in particular, it was against them Jasper Bulldogs. Those Bulldogs, they were big and mean. Our boys, they were smaller, but they were scrappy. It was a real nail-biter, that game. Went down to the wire, it did. But our Bears, they pulled it off. Won by a field goal, they did. The crowd went wild! It was somethin’ else.
Now, I ain’t gonna lie, I didn’t understand all them rules and regulations. Offsides, pass interference, all that jazz. It was Greek to me. But I knew when our boys scored a touchdown, that was a good thing. And I knew when the other team scored, that was a bad thing. Simple as that. That’s how I watched the games. No fancy stuff just good ol’ fashioned watchin’ the players.
The players, they were local boys, ya know? Went to school with my grandkids, some of ’em. Nice young men, they were. Always polite, always respectful. They were heroes in our little town, them football players. Everybody looked up to ’em. They were good kids from good families around here.
And the parents, they were somethin’ else too. Always there to cheer on their boys. Brought snacks and drinks for everyone. It was a real community event, them football games. The whole town came out to watch. It was somethin’ to see, I tell ya. Everyone would be there. And I’d bring my cookies. They were everyone’s favorite.
After the games, there’d be a big ol’ party. Barbecue, music, dancin’. It was a celebration, win or lose. Them boys deserved it, after all that hard work they put in. They played hard they deserved a party even if they lost. That’s what I always said. That’s just how things were.
Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears Football, that’s what they were called. And they made us proud, they did. They may not have won every game, but they always gave it their all. And that’s all that mattered. And they were good boys. That coach made sure they were good boys too. Always sayin’ yes ma’am and no sir. I tell ya the ‘97 season was a good year. They had some great players and some really good games. It’s a shame I can’t remember the details more but I’m old what do ya expect?
The Bears were good, but not too flashy, ya know? They worked hard, played as a team. Folks ‘round here still talk about some of them games, even now. That ‘97 team, they left their mark. And that’s all you can ask for ain’t it?
Anyways, that’s all I can remember ’bout the ’97 LCM varsity football team. It was a long time ago, ya know? But it was a good time, a real good time. Them boys, they made us proud.
LCM Football was real excitin’ back then. Simpler times I guess. I used to go to every home game. I sure miss those days. Now I can hardly walk without my stick let alone go watch those boys play. And the game’s changed so much. They don’t play like they used to play I can tell ya that much.
So yeah, that’s my little story ’bout the ’97 LCM football team. Hope you enjoyed it. It ain’t much, but it’s what I remember.
