Okay, let’s talk about this Kristoff JT Signature Series Box-Pressed Toro I picked up. It was May 11th, I remember that clearly. I saw these box-pressed ones and thought, “Hmm, Kristoff doesn’t do many of those.” So, I grabbed one. They are made at some small factory in the Dominican Republic, from what I know. I think it was the only size they had, a 6 x 54, which is called a Toro Extra, I believe.
Getting Started
First thing I did was take a good look at it. The wrapper was nice, I remember Kristoff usually uses either a Honduran Criollo or a Brazilian Maduro, and this one seemed like the latter – dark and oily. I gave it a good squeeze. It felt firm, no soft spots, which is always a good sign. I cut it with my usual cutter and took a pre-light draw. It felt fine, not too tight, not too loose. Then, I toasted the foot with my lighter and got it going.
First Few Puffs
- The initial puffs were pretty strong, peppery. I was not expecting that.
- It settled down a bit after that, and I started getting some earthy, woody flavors.
- It was a bit of a rough start, but it was getting better.
Burning Down
As I kept smoking it, the flavor got a bit richer. That pepper from the beginning faded into the background. I started picking up some coffee and maybe even a little chocolate. It was burning pretty evenly, too, which I appreciated. I did have to touch it up once or twice, but nothing major. The ash held on pretty well, too. I like when a cigar has a nice, strong ash.
Wrapping Up
Overall, it was a decent smoke. It was not my favorite Kristoff, but it was not bad. It lasted me a good hour and a half, maybe a little longer. I was outside enjoying the nice weather, so I was not really paying attention to the time. Would I buy it again? Maybe, if I am in the mood for something strong and a bit different. It is definitely not a mild cigar, that’s for sure. But hey, if you see one, give it a try. You might like it more than I did.
