junction box extension: A Simple Solution for Your Wiring Needs.

Okay, here’s my post about extending a junction box.

So, I had this project in my garage where I needed more outlets. I had one of those old, small junction boxes, and it was packed tighter than a can of sardines. I thought, “Why not just add another box and spread things out a bit?” Seemed easier than rewiring the whole place.

Gathering My Stuff

First things first, I made sure I had everything I needed. I grabbed:

  • A new junction box, one of those plastic ones, felt safer to me.
  • Some extra wiring, made sure it was the same gauge as the existing stuff.
  • Wire connectors, the twisty kind.
  • A screwdriver, a wire stripper, and some electrical tape, just in case.
  • My trusty voltage tester, wouldn’t touch a wire without it.

Cutting the Power

This is the part where you gotta be super careful. I went to my electrical panel and flipped the breaker for the garage. Then, just to be double sure, I used my voltage tester on the existing box. No power? Good to go.

Mounting the New Box

I picked a spot right next to the old box for the new one. I held it up, marked where the screws would go, and drilled some pilot holes. Then it was just a matter of screwing that box in place. Easy peasy.

Connecting the Wires

Now for the fun part. I took the cover off the old box, and man, was it a mess in there! I carefully disconnected a few wires, just enough to give me some slack. Then, I stripped the ends of those wires and some new pieces I cut. Using the wire connectors, I joined the old wires to the new ones, making sure I matched colors – white to white, black to black, and so on. Then, I ran the new wires over to the new box and connected them up to the outlets I was adding.

Buttoning It Up

Once everything was wired, I tucked the wires neatly into the boxes and put the covers back on. I have to say, it looked a lot cleaner than before. Then, back to the electrical panel to flip the breaker on.

Testing It Out

I plugged in a lamp to one of the new outlets, and boom, light! I checked all the new outlets, and they were all working. Mission accomplished, and it feels pretty good to have tackled that myself. Now my garage is ready for some serious projects.

It wasn’t that hard but you know, when you work with these things, you need to be careful. Turn off that power. Make sure those connections are tight and neat. If you’re not sure about something, maybe call someone who knows, like a professional electrician.
