Well, let me tell ya about this here Metrowest Basketball. I don’t know all them fancy words, but I’ll tell ya what I know, ya hear?
What is this Metrowest Basketball thing anyway?
From what I gather, Metrowest Basketball is a big deal for the young’uns around here. It’s like, a bunch of teams playin’ against each other. Boys and girls, I reckon. They got this league, see? Like a club, but for basketball. They run around, throw the ball, try to get it in that hoop thing. Sounds like a lot of huffin’ and puffin’ to me.
They got all sorts of teams. Travel teams, they call ’em. That means they go around playin’ other towns, I guess. Costs a pretty penny though, from what I hear. Someone was sayin’ it’s like five hundred, five hundred and fifty dollars or somethin’. Lordy, that’s a lot of money just to bounce a ball! And then they gotta pay the coach too, sometimes. Nothin’s free these days, is it?
Leagues and stuff
- They got this here ICBA League. Don’t ask me what that stands for, I ain’t got a clue. But it’s a big league, lots of teams.
- Then there’s the Big East. Mostly them Catholic schools, they say. But there’s a couple that ain’t, like that Butler fella and UConn. UConn, they’re the big shots ‘round here. Won all sorts of championships, the boys and the girls. They even call Connecticut the “Home of the Basketball Capital of the World.” Imagine that!
- And of course, there’s the Metrowest Basketball League itself. That’s the one all the local kids play in, I think. They even have playoffs in March! My grandson Billy played in that once. He was so excited, bless his heart, but they lost. Still, he had fun, that’s what matters. They go all over playing, Hopkinton and all them other towns.
How do ya join this Metrowest Basketball?
Well, first ya gotta be a young’un, I reckon. And ya gotta be able to run and bounce that ball at the same time, which ain’t as easy as it looks, let me tell ya. They have tryouts, see? They watch all the kids and pick the best ones for the teams. They try to make it fair, they say, but I don’t know. Seems like some kids always get picked and some don’t. Life ain’t fair, never was, never will be.
Then ya gotta sign up and pay the money. And ya gotta go to all them practices and games. It’s a lot of work, I tell ya. But the kids seem to like it. They get all excited about it.
What else do they do?
Well, they got this website, they tell me. You can go on there and see all the scores and who’s playin’ who. They even got videos of the games, they call ‘em highlights. And pictures of the players. It’s all very fancy these days. They got sponsors too, folks who give money to help pay for stuff. I don’t know who they are, but they must be rich if they are giving money away.
And they got rules, of course. Can’t just be runnin’ around wild, ya know. Gotta follow the rules or ya get in trouble. Just like life, I guess.
Is it worth it?
Well, that depends on who ya ask. The kids seem to think so. They get to run around, play with their friends, and maybe even win a trophy or two. And it keeps ‘em outta trouble, I guess. That’s worth somethin’ these days. But it’s a lot of time and money, that’s for sure. And all that running around, they’ll be worn out before they’re old enough to do some real work!
So that’s what I know about Metrowest Basketball. It ain’t much, but it’s somethin’. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I gotta go make some supper. All this talk about basketball has made me hungry.
