Man, I gotta tell you about this wild ride I just had with the IUP rugby team. It all started when I saw a poster on campus about the team needing more players. I used to play a bit in high school, nothing serious, but I figured, why not? So, I showed up to their practice, feeling a little out of place at first, I won’t lie.
The coach, a big, burly guy with a surprising soft voice, greeted me and threw me right into the drills. Let me tell you, these guys were intense! I was huffing and puffing, trying to keep up, but they were all super encouraging, yelling tips and cheering me on.
- First thing we did was a bunch of passing drills. My hands were like butter, dropping the ball left and right. But the guys were patient, showing me the proper technique, and eventually, I started to get the hang of it.
- Next up was tackling practice. Oh boy, this was a whole different beast. I got laid out a few times, but I also managed to make a couple of decent tackles. It’s all about the form, they said.
- Then came the scrimmages. This was where the real fun began. We split into two teams and just went at it. It was chaotic, it was messy, but it was also exhilarating. I even scored a try, which felt amazing!
After a few weeks of practice, I actually made it onto the team! Our first game was against Coastal Carolina. It was a nail-biter, but thanks to Dom Holmes, who was an absolute beast out there, we pulled off a win, 21-14.
We kept that momentum going throughout the season. Dom was on fire, leading us to victory after victory. I even got some playing time, which was a huge confidence booster.
Then came the semifinals against Norwich. They were tough, no doubt about it. It was a real back-and-forth battle, but we managed to edge them out in the end.
The Championship Game
The final game was against the University of Northern Iowa, and let me tell you, it was one for the books. It was a close game, a real nail-biter, but we fought hard and came out on top, 38-29. We were the champions! It was the first 15s national championship for our club. Can you believe it? This whole season has just been a dream come true. I went from a washed-up has-been to a national champion, all thanks to this incredible team. I wouldn’t trade this experience for anything.
