Okay, so, I’ve been messing around with different ways to store matches. You know, just trying to figure out the best way to keep them safe and dry, especially when I’m out camping or whatever.
First, I grabbed a bunch of those little cardboard matchboxes, the ones you get for free all the time. I tried putting them in a plastic bag, thinking that would keep them dry. It kinda worked, but the boxes still got all messed up and damp if it rained hard enough. Not cool.
Then, I started looking into those metal match safes. They seemed pretty sturdy, so I bought a few different ones online. They were only like a buck each, which is not bad. I tested them out by tossing some matches in and seeing how they held up. Some of them were decent, but the matches inside still rattled around a lot. It is noisy.

I also experimented with striking the matches. Always make sure to close the matchbox before striking, you know? And strike away from yourself, not towards your body. It is just common sense, but, people forget sometimes.
After that, I decided to get a little more serious. I read some articles online about match safety and stuff. It was mostly common-sense, like storing them in a cool, dry place, away from kids and pets. I was more focused on finding the perfect container.
My Findings
So, I ended up trying a few more things. I found these waterproof containers, like the kind people use for boating or whatever. They seemed pretty solid, so I stuck a few matchboxes in one of those. That actually worked pretty well. The matches stayed dry, even after I left the container outside in the rain overnight.
But, for everyday use, I still like the little metal safes. I just wrap the matches in a bit of cloth or something to keep them from making noise. It’s not perfect, but it works for me. And, always, always, I make sure those used matches are completely out before I toss them. Safety first, right?
Eventually, I realized there are so many ways to keep these little guys safe and dry. Just find one way works best for you!
