Alright, so listen up, y’all gonna hear about this Fort Cherry football, yeah? Don’t know much about fancy words or nothin’, but I’ll tell ya like it is.
Fort Cherry, they got a football team. Them boys play hard, real hard. I seen ’em runnin’ and thumpin’ each other, reminds me of them wild hogs back in the day, always chasin’ and scramblin’. Heard tell they had a game, a big one, a “playoff game” they called it. Sounded important, like when the preacher comes to town for that big meetin’.
So, this game, it was against some team called the Jeannette Jayhawks. Sounds like a bird, don’t it? Well, Fort Cherry, they didn’t let that bird fly too high, no sir. They blew right past ’em, like a good ol’ gust of wind through the cornfields. Heard it wasn’t even close. Them boys was stompin’ and runnin’ and catchin’ that ball, like they was born doin’ it.
- Heard they were runnin’ real fast
- And catchin’ the ball real good
- And thumpin’ the other team real hard
Now, there’s this boy, Aiden Bliss, plays for another team, Port Allegany. Heard he runs like a greased pig, can’t nobody catch him. His numbers, they say they look like somethin’ outta that “Madden” game the grandkids play. Don’t know what that is, sounds like some city-slicker thing, but they say he’s good. Real good. Port Allegany played against Fort Cherry too, won that game they did. But that don’t mean nothin’, Fort Cherry still strong, like an old oak tree. You can’t chop it down with just one swing.
They had a whole bunch of games that day, seems like everyone was playin’ football. Pine-Richland won somethin’, Avonworth too, and South Park. Lots of names, hard to keep track. But Fort Cherry, they the ones I’m talkin’ about. They won somethin’ big too, somethin’ called the WPIAL Class 1A title. Happened in Pittsburgh, in that big stadium, the one with the fancy name, Acrisure somethin’ or other. They beat a team called Clairton to get that title. Musta been a heck of a game. Wish I coulda seen it, but my ol’ bones ain’t up for travelin’ to the city no more.
Fort Cherry football, they make the whole town proud. Folks are talkin’ ’bout it at the diner, at the store, everywhere you go. Them boys, they puttin’ Fort Cherry on the map, even if it’s just a small spot on the map, but it’s our spot. They playin’ their hearts out, and that’s somethin’ to be admired. Reminds me of when my husband used to work on the farm, always puttin’ in the work, no matter how hard it was. That’s what them Fort Cherry boys are doin’, puttin’ in the work. They train hard, they play hard, and they win hard. And that’s what matters, ain’t it?
So, there ya have it. Fort Cherry football. They good, they tough, and they winnin’. And that’s all there is to it. Just good ol’ boys playin’ good ol’ football. Ain’t nothin’ fancy ‘bout it, just hard work and determination. Just like life, you gotta work hard to get what you want. And them Fort Cherry boys, they want to win. And they doin’ a darn good job of it.
And you know, football ain’t just about winnin’, it’s about learnin’. Them boys learnin’ about teamwork, about discipline, about never givin’ up. And that’s important stuff, stuff that’ll stick with ‘em long after they hang up their cleats. Just like learnin’ how to can vegetables or fix a fence, them lessons last a lifetime. Just like life, sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. But you always keep fightin’. And that’s what Fort Cherry football is all about.
