So, they use them towels to wipe their hands, I reckon. Can’t be easy catchin’ that there ball with all that sweat slickin’ up your hands, you know? Makes sense to me.
And it ain’t just sweat neither. Sometimes it rains, sometimes the field’s all muddy. That ball gets all wet and slimy, and I bet it’s hard to hold onto. So, they wipe that ball down with the towel, get a good grip on it. Gotta keep that ball dry, I guess, or else you ain’t gonna be throwin’ or catchin’ it right.

Now, I also heard tell that some folks are sayin’ they can’t use these towels no more for dryin’ the ball in some fancy football league over in England. Somethin’ about wastin’ time or somethin’. They gonna use more balls instead, they say. Sounds like a whole lotta fuss to me. Seems like a perfectly good towel does the job just fine, but what do I know? I’m just an old lady watchin’ TV.
And you know what else I noticed? Them towels ain’t all the same. Some are little, some are big. Some are plain, some got fancy colors and logos and stuff. I guess it’s like everything else these days, gotta have your own special towel, gotta stand out from the crowd. Kids these days, always gotta be flashy.
But no matter what they look like, them towels is important. They help them fellas play the game, keep their hands dry, keep the ball dry, keep their eyes clear. It’s a simple thing, a towel, but it makes a big difference. Just like a good pair of work gloves for farmin’ or a sturdy apron for cookin’. You need the right tools for the job, and for them football players, that towel is one of their tools.
So next time you’re watchin’ a football game, pay attention to them towels. They ain’t just hangin’ there for nothin’. They’re workin’ hard, just like them players. Keepin’ things dry, keepin’ things clean, keepin’ things goin’. It’s all part of the game, I tell ya.
