Well, let me tell ya ’bout this here siue men’s basketball thing. I ain’t no expert, ya know, but I watched some games, and I can tell ya what I saw. It’s like watchin’ them young’uns runnin’ around in the yard, only they got a ball and hoops.
First off, these boys, they run fast, real fast. Like chickens chasin’ after corn. They dribble that ball up and down, up and down. Sometimes they make it in the hoop, sometimes they don’t. It’s kinda like life, ain’t it? Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose.
I heard tell they played against some team called the “Fighting Illini.” Sounds scary, right? Like a bunch of roosters ready to fight. But these SIUE boys, they didn’t back down. They fought hard, even if they didn’t always win. It’s like when that old mule, Bess, tries to buck ya off. You gotta hold on tight and keep on goin’.
- They got this one fella, Mgbako, or somethin’ like that. Heard he scored a whole bunch of points. Thirty-somethin’, they said. That’s a lot of points, I reckon. Like countin’ all the eggs in the henhouse, only more.
- And then there’s talk about “fast-break points.” I ain’t sure what that means exactly, but it sounds important. Like when you gotta run real fast to catch that runaway piglet before it gets into the garden.
- They also say somethin’ ’bout “bench points.” I guess that’s when the boys sittin’ on the bench get to play and score. It’s good to give everyone a chance, ya know? Like sharin’ the pie at the church picnic.
They played against another team, the “Hoosiers,” too. From Indiana, I think. Folks was talkin’ about it at the market. Said it was a tough game. Tough like tryin’ to pull weeds outta the garden after a rainstorm. But these SIUE boys, they kept on playin’. That’s what matters, I guess. Don’t give up, no matter how hard it gets.
I saw on the TV, they got these scores, they call ’em “live scores.” It’s like watchin’ the game happen right then and there, even if you ain’t at the place where they playin’. It’s kinda like magic, if you ask me. Like listenin’ to the radio and hearin’ voices from far away.
And they got this thing called “box scores” too. I don’t rightly know what that is, but it sounds fancy. Maybe it’s like keepin’ score on a piece of paper, only in a box. I always just counted on my fingers, ya know? But these young folks, they got their ways of doin’ things.
One thing I do know is that these boys work hard. They practice and practice, just like learnin’ to bake a good pie. You gotta keep at it, even if you burn a few along the way. And sometimes, even if you work hard, you still lose. But that’s okay. It’s about tryin’ your best, and learnin’ from your mistakes. That’s what my pappy always told me.
So, yeah, that’s what I think about this siue men’s basketball. It’s excitin’, it’s fast-paced, and it’s kinda like life, all rolled into one. You win some, you lose some, but you gotta keep on playin’. And that’s all there is to it, I reckon. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I gotta go check on them chickens. They been makin’ a ruckus all mornin’.
