Well, let me tell ya ’bout this here Samurai Sevens Rugby, or whatever them fancy folks call it. It’s like this, see? They got this team, Shogun Rugby they call ’em now, used to be Samurai somethin’ or other. Terry Sands, that fella, he started it way back in ’96. Heard tell he liked how them Japanese fellas played rugby, all spirited and tough-like.
Now, these fellas, they ain’t playin’ regular rugby with all them fifteen fellas on each side. Nah, this is sevens rugby, only seven on each side. Makes it faster, I reckon. More runnin’ and such. Quicker game, ya know? Less time for them to be standin’ around, which is good, ’cause who wants to watch a bunch of fellas standin’ around?
They say these Shogun fellas are some of the best in the world at this sevens game. Travel all over, they do. Amsterdam, Paris, even that New York place. Seems like everyone wants to see ’em play. And why not? They gotta be good if they’re travelin’ all over the place, right? That’s what I figure, anyways.
- Heard they even got some sort of league now, Premier Rugby Sevens, where the men and women get treated the same. That’s somethin’, ain’t it?
- Back in my day, women didn’t do much runnin’ around, ‘cept after the chickens maybe.
They say this sevens rugby is gettin’ real popular. Olympics and all. Lots of folks watchin’. Heard tell over half a million folks watched it live in Paris. That’s a whole lotta folks, let me tell ya. More folks than I ever seen in one place, that’s for sure.
And these players, well, they ain’t doin’ too bad for themselves, neither. Heard them Aussie fellas makin’ a hundred and ten thousand dollars a year just playin’ this sevens rugby. That’s a lot of money, more than most folks ’round here ever seen. Guess all that runnin’ and such pays off, eh?
They got all them social media things too, these days. Saw somethin’ ’bout Shogun Rugby havin’ over a thousand followers. Don’t rightly know what that means, but it sounds like a lot of folks are interested in what they’re doin’. Guess that’s a good thing for ’em. More folks watchin’, more money they make, I reckon.
They say this Shogun Rugby, they’re all about makin’ players better. “Talent cultivation” they call it. Sounds fancy, but I guess it just means they teach ’em how to play better. And they do a good job of it, seems like. Always winnin’ and such. Must be doin’ somethin’ right, them fellas.
So, that’s what I know ’bout this here Samurai Sevens Rugby. Fast game, lots of runnin’, good players, lots of folks watchin’. Seems like a good way to spend an afternoon, if you ask me. Better than watchin’ the grass grow, anyways. And that’s sayin’ somethin’, ’cause sometimes watchin’ the grass grow is all there is to do ’round here.
Anyway, that’s the gist of it. Them Shogun fellas, they run around a lot, throw a ball, and folks seem to like it. More power to ‘em, I say. As long as they ain’t stealin’ chickens, they’re alright by me.
