Essick Air BFC-2000 Review: A Budget-Friendly Box Fan Evaporative Air Cooler for Hot Days.

So, today I wanna talk about this thing I messed around with – the Essick Air Box Fan Evaporative Air Cooler, model BFC-2000. It’s been kinda hot lately, and I figured, why not give this thing a shot? I mean, who needs fancy air conditioning when you got one of these, right?

First off, I got this thing delivered. It’s not huge, but it’s not tiny either. About 22 inches all around, and 10 inches thick. I unpacked it, and it looked pretty straightforward. Nothing too complicated. Just a box fan with some extra stuff to make it an evaporative cooler.

I started by looking at the parts. There’s this slim media thing that’s supposed to fit at the inlets. That’s where the air gets sucked in, I guess. The idea is that the water evaporates off this media, and that cools the air down. Pretty simple concept, honestly.

Then, I filled it up with water. There’s a reservoir somewhere in there. You just pour the water in, not rocket science. I noticed it had multiple inlets to pull in air, making sense. More air, more cooling, theoretically.

Next up, the moment of truth. I powered it on.

  • The fan spun up just fine.
  • It wasn’t super loud, which is a plus.
  • I could feel the air moving, so that was good.

Did it cool the room down like an air conditioner? Nope, not really. But did it make the air feel a bit cooler? Yeah, I think so. It felt like a nice breeze, but not ice-cold or anything.

I played around with it for a while, moving it to different spots in the room. It seemed to work best when it was near a window, maybe because of the airflow. Or maybe I’m just imagining things.

I also read somewhere that these things are rated in something called cubic feet per minute, or CFM. Apparently, that’s how much air they move. And the experts, or whoever, say you need like 20 to 40 air changes per hour. Whatever that means. I didn’t measure any of that, just winged it.

My Final Thoughts:

Honestly, it’s not a bad little gadget for the price. It’s not gonna replace an actual AC unit, especially if you live somewhere really hot. But if you just need a little something to take the edge off on a warm day, it does the job. It made the room more comfortable, kinda like a fan but with a slight cooling effect. I’d say it dropped the room temp by a few degrees, maybe 5 to 15, like what I saw in some random product description. It works best in less humid climates, I think. Overall, I’d give it a thumbs up, it’s been working as it should, and it does provide a decent amount of coolness. It’s no miracle worker, but it’s something.
