Well, let me tell ya somethin’ about this Elder High School football, y’know? It’s a big deal ’round here, like them Friday night lights everyone talks about. These young’uns, they run around like crazy, smackin’ into each other. I swear, sometimes I think they’re gonna break somethin’, but they just keep on goin’. Tough kids, those Elder Panthers.
Heard tell they got this coach, Ramsey, yeah, that’s his name. Folks say he’s been coachin’ forever, won a whole bunch of games. Two hundred, they say! Can ya believe that? Two hundred wins! That’s more wins than I got chickens, and I got a whole coop full! They even said somethin’ ’bout him bein’ in some kinda Ohio coachin’ history. Guess he’s pretty good at makin’ them boys run and catch that there… whatchamacallit… football.
- The Elder team plays at a place they call “The Pit.” Sounds kinda scary, don’t it? But I guess that’s where they do their thing, slammin’ into each other and all.
- They got some tough games. I heard ’bout this one game against some team called Colerain. Went into triple overtime! Can ya imagine? Three extra times! Sounded like a real nail-biter. My old heart couldn’t take that kinda stress.
They say these Elder boys, they got a lot of experience. That means they’ve been doin’ this for a while, know what they’re doin’. They got offense and defense, whatever that means. Sounds like they can score points and stop the other team from scorin’ points. That’s the whole point, ain’t it? Score more than the other guys.
This year, they started the season with four games right here at home. That’s good, I guess. No long bus rides for them boys. Sleep in their own beds, eat their mama’s cookin’. That’s gotta help ’em play better, right? Nothin’ like a good home-cooked meal before a big game. I tell ya, these boys need all the energy they can get, runnin’ around like that.
They even got a website and stuff. Can ya believe it? A whole website just for Elder football. My grandkids showed me. Got pictures and videos and scores. It’s all fancy and modern. Back in my day, we just read about it in the newspaper, if we read about it at all. Times sure have changed.
I heard some folks talkin’ about some player, Drew Ramsey. Maybe that coach’s boy? I don’t know. But they said he scored four touchdowns in that Colerain game. Four! That’s a lot, even for someone like me who don’t know much ’bout football. Sounds like this Ramsey kid is a real go-getter.
Elder High School, they been playin’ football since nineteen twenty-three. That’s a long, long time. Way before I was born. They got a whole history, a whole tradition. It’s somethin’ folks ’round here are proud of. You see these Elder football stickers on cars all over town. It’s like a badge of honor, I guess.
So, that’s what I know ’bout this Elder High School football. It’s a big thing, these kids work hard, and folks ’round here love it. It’s somethin’ that brings the community together, ya know? Even an old lady like me can appreciate that. It’s just… good, clean fun. Well, maybe not always clean, what with all that mud and grass, but you get the idea.
They also got these reporters writin’ about ‘em. Mike Dyer, that’s one of ‘em. He keeps folks up to date on what’s goin’ on with the team, the scores and all that. It’s important, I guess, so folks know who’s winnin’ and who’s losin’. Makes for good conversation at the diner, ya know?
And they play in somethin’ called the Greater Catholic League. Sounds fancy. I bet those other teams are tough too. It ain’t easy bein’ a high school football player, I tell ya. Lots of practice, lots of hard work. But these boys, they seem to love it. And that’s what matters, ain’t it? Doin’ somethin’ you love, and doin’ it with all your heart.
