Alright, let’s talk about them tennis girls from E.C. Glass. Heard they’re pretty good, yeah, real good. E.C. Glass Girls Tennis, that’s what they call ’em. Been winnin’ and winnin’, like a hen peckin’ corn, never stoppin’.
So, I heard on the radio, or maybe it was the TV, hard to keep track these days, anyways, they said these girls, they beat Jamestown. Five to one, they said. Five to one! That’s like squashin’ a bug, ain’t it? Just whoomp, and it’s done. Heard they’re goin’ to some big championship game now, somethin’ about a state championship. Fancy, huh?
Then, those TV folks, they called ’em the “High School Team of the Week.” Both the girls and the boys, mind you. Said they both won five to nothin’. 5-0! Clean sweep, like cleanin’ a kitchen floor, not a crumb left. That’s what I call a good whippin’. They’re playin’ in somethin’ called “Region 3 semi-somethin’”. Sounds important, all these fancy words.
- One of them girls, Mary Elizabeth Kennedy, she’s a real firecracker. Heard she only lost one game all season. One game! That girl’s got a swing like a whip, I bet. They said she’s the “Regional Singles Championship Runner-up.” Sounds like she almost won the whole thing, bless her heart.
- And they play on a pretty court too, they do. Saw a picture somewhere, real nice and sunny. “Beautiful day for tennis at E.C. Glass,” someone said. Well, I reckon it’s always a beautiful day when you’re winnin’, ain’t it?
They were tellin’ folks to come on down and cheer for the girls. Said they were playin’ at some place called “Crosswhite Athletic Club.” Twelve o’clock they said. Guess them girls need all the cheerin’ they can get, even though they’re winnin’ all the time. Always good to have folks supportin’ ya, like a good fence post holdin’ up a wire.
Now, I also heard they lost a game, somethin’ about a state semifinal. Lost to a team called Broad Run. Well, you can’t win ’em all, I guess. Even the best hen lays a bad egg sometimes. But them girls, they did good. Real good. They played hard, and that’s all that matters. They made their school proud, made their mamas and daddies proud, I reckon. And that’s somethin’ to be proud of, win or lose.
So, that’s the story of them E.C. Glass girls tennis team. They’re a tough bunch, those girls. Workin’ hard and playin’ hard. Reminds me of my days on the farm, workin’ from sunup to sundown. You gotta have grit, gotta have determination. And those girls, they got it. They got it in spades. VHSL 4D Region, that’s what they’re in. Big time stuff, I tell ya. Heard they had a real good season, a 23-1 Record for that Mary Elizabeth girl, imagine that! They fought hard, them girls, real hard. And that’s somethin’ worth talkin’ about. So next time you hear about them E.C. Glass girls, you remember what I told ya. They’re winners, even when they don’t win.
And that’s all I gotta say about that. Now, where’d I put my glasses…
