Alright, let’s talk about them tennis nets, you know, the thing they stretch across the court. I seen a whole bunch of ‘em in my day, all sorts. Some fancy, some not so much. But they all gotta do the same thing, keep them balls from flyin’ all over the place.
First off, you got your big, fancy nets, the ones they use in them big tournaments on TV. Them things are heavy duty, ya know? Gotta be, with them fellas whacking the ball so hard. They say these nets are made for “competitive play,” whatever that means. Sounds expensive to me. They stretch all the way across the court, and they gotta be a certain height. Something like 42 inches at the posts, I heard tell. And they sag a bit in the middle, on purpose like, so the ball can go over easier.
Now, them nets are held up by a rope or a wire, somethin’ strong. And they gotta be tight, real tight, or the net’ll sag too much, and the game won’t be fair. I seen it happen once, down at the park. Old man Johnson’s net was so saggy, the ball kept gettin’ stuck. Took ‘em forever to fix it.
- If the ball hits the top of the net durin’ a serve, and it still goes in the right spot, they call it a “let.” Means ya get to serve again. Lucky you!
- But if it hits the net and goes out, well, that’s a fault. One fault’s okay, but two in a row and you lose the point. Don’t wanna do that!
- And if you hit the post with the ball, that’s a fault too. Them posts are skinny, but somehow, the ball finds ‘em sometimes.
Then you got your smaller nets, for the kids, or just for messin’ around in the backyard. Them nets ain’t as fancy, but they get the job done. You can even get them “portable” ones, that you can take with you wherever you go. I seen folks usin’ them at the park, for a little picnic game. Seems like fun.
Some nets are black, some are green, some are other colors. I don’t reckon it matters much, long as you can see the ball against it. But I guess some folks like the fancy colors, makes ‘em feel like a pro, ya know? And some nets are thicker than others, and some are made of different stuff. Some are “double braided,” they say. Sounds strong, whatever it means. And some have these “vinyl bands” on the top, to make ‘em last longer, I guess.
You can buy these nets at all sorts of places. Sportin’ goods stores, mostly. They got all kinds, from the cheap ones to the real expensive ones. I even seen ‘em online, but I don’t trust that internet stuff too much. I like to see what I’m buyin’ with my own two eyes.
They got pickleball nets too, them are a bit shorter than tennis nets, somethin’ like 36 inches high at the posts. Pickleball’s a bit different from tennis, smaller court, different paddles. But the net’s still important, gotta keep them balls from goin’ astray.
So, if you’re lookin’ for a tennis net, you gotta figure out what you need. You need a big, fancy one for serious play? Or just a little one for the kids? And how much you wanna spend? Once you know that, you can start shoppin’ around. Just make sure you get a good one, one that’ll last. ‘Cause a saggy net ain’t no fun for nobody. Remember to get one that is strong and can handle a lot of use, especially if you are going to be playing a lot of tennis. And that’s all I gotta say about tennis nets.
