Curriculum for a High School Basketball Class: Essential Skills & Drills
Alright, listen up, young’uns! We gonna talk about this here… uh… “curriculum for a high school basketball class.” Sounds fancy, but it just means what them kids gotta learn to play ball, you hear?
First off, them kids gotta learn the basics. Like, how to bounce that ball. We call it dribbling. Gotta learn to dribble without lookin’ down all the time. Heads up, eyes on the court! That’s what I always say. And teach ‘em to use both hands, not just that one good one. Makes ‘em harder to guard, see?
Then there’s passin’. Can’t hog the ball all the time, gotta share with your team. Teach ‘em chest passes, bounce passes, overhead passes… all sorts of passes. And not just throwin’ it wild, gotta be accurate, gotta hit your teammate in the hands. Practice makes perfect, that’s the truth, no matter what you doin’.
- Dribbling Drills
- Passing Drills
- Shooting Drills
And shootin’, oh lordy, shootin’ is important. Gotta show ‘em how to hold the ball right, how to aim, how to follow through. Start close to the basket, then back ‘em up as they get better. Layups, free throws, jump shots… gotta learn it all. And don’t forget them feet! Gotta have good footwork to get open and get that shot off. We used to just throw the ball at the hoop for hours on end, and that worked alright too! But these young folks, they need all this fancy learnin’ stuff, I guess.
Now, defense! Can’t just let the other team score all the time, gotta stop ‘em. Teach ‘em how to stay low, how to move their feet, how to keep their hands up. Man-to-man, zone defense… all that jazz. Stealin’ the ball is good too, but gotta do it clean, no foulin’. Defense wins games, that’s what my old man used to say, and he knew a thing or two, even if he never saw a basketball in his life.
But it ain’t all just about skills, you know? Gotta be in shape too. Runnin’, jumpin’, doin’ them push-ups and sit-ups. Gotta be strong and quick to play this game. And gotta work together as a team. Can’t be selfish out there, gotta help each other out. Talk to each other, encourage each other. That’s what makes a good team.
And somethin’ else these young folks need to learn… how to handle winnin’ and losin’. Can’t get all cocky when you win, and can’t get all down in the dumps when you lose. Gotta learn from your mistakes and keep tryin’. Sportsmanship, they call it. Bein’ respectful to the other team and the refs, even when you don’t agree with ‘em. That’s important, real important.
So, that’s pretty much it. Dribbling, passin’, shootin’, defense, fitness, teamwork, and sportsmanship. Teach ‘em that, and they’ll be alright. And don’t forget to make it fun! Kids don’t wanna just stand around listenin’ to you yap all day. Gotta get ‘em movin’, get ‘em playin’, get ‘em competin’. That’s how they learn. That’s how they get better. And that’s how you get yourself a good basketball team. Now get outta here and go teach them kids somethin’!
One last thing, make sure these kids are doin’ alright in their heads too. Sometimes they need to write stuff down or talk about their feelin’s. Give ‘em journals or somethin’. It helps them think straight and play better. Heck, back in my day, we just went and chopped wood, but times are different now I guess.
