Create Your Summer Box – 12 Pieces: Perfect for Beach Days

Alright, listen up, y’all. We gonna talk about this here “summer box,” whatever that fancy city folks call it. I call it a “stuff sack,” and we gonna make our own. Twelve things, they say? Huh, I got more than twelve things just laying around my barn, but we’ll play their game. This here ain’t gonna be no store-bought, pretty-pretty box. It’s gonna be real, like me.

First thing, you gotta get yourself a good bag. Forget them fancy waterproof this and that. We usin’ a feed sack. Yeah, the one the chicken feed come in. It’s tough, it holds a lot, and it’s free. Wash it out good though, unless you want your towels smellin’ like chicken scratch. That’s number one. The biggest thing, that sack is.

Next, we need somethin’ to keep the sun off your face. Now, I ain’t talkin’ ’bout no fancy lady hat. I mean a good ol’ baseball cap. Got a whole pile of ’em from the feed store. They give ’em out like candy. Keeps the sun out your eyes, and if it gets dirty, who cares? Wash it in the crick, let it dry on the fence post. That’s two.

  • Three, you need a towel. Not one of them little fluffy things. A big, thick towel, like the ones we use for the cows. Gotta be able to dry you off good after a swim in the pond, or maybe just wiping the sweat off your brow after hoeing the garden all day.
  • Four, sunscreen. Now, I ain’t used this stuff much in my day, but the young’uns say it’s important. Keeps you from gettin’ all burnt up like a piece of toast. Get the cheap stuff. It all smells the same to me.
  • Five, somethin’ to drink. Water, of course. Fill up a jug, not one of them plastic bottles that bend easy. Get a good, sturdy jug. And maybe a little somethin’ extra for later… you know, after the work’s done. A little homemade somethin’. But don’t tell nobody I said that.
  • Six, snacks. Can’t be workin’ all day on an empty stomach. Apples, peaches, whatever’s growin’ in the garden or the orchard. Maybe some jerky, if you got it. Somethin’ that’ll stick to your ribs.

Seven, a good pair of sunglasses. The sun can be right bright out there, especially on the water. Don’t need nothin’ fancy, just somethin’ to keep you from squintin’ all day. Got mine at the dollar store, and they work just fine. Keeps them flies out of my eyes too.

Eight, bug spray. Them mosquitos and gnats can be fierce in the summer. Nothin’ worse than tryin’ to enjoy a nice evening and gettin’ eaten alive. Spray yourself down good, especially around your ankles and wrists. And your neck, them skeeters love bitin’ necks.

Nine, a book. Now, I ain’t much for readin’ them fancy novels, but a good seed catalogue or a farmer’s almanac, that’s my kind of readin’. Somethin’ to pass the time when you’re takin’ a break. Or maybe just lookin’ at the pictures. Learnin’ is important, even when you’re restin’. Gotta know what to plant and when. And gotta know when the moon is right for plantin’ certain things.

Ten, a small shovel or trowel. You never know when you might need to dig somethin’ up, or maybe plant a little somethin’. I always carry one with me. Handy for all sorts of things. Diggin’ worms, fixin’ a fence, even gettin’ rocks outta the garden. Always be prepared that’s what I say.

Eleven, a small knife. A good, sharp knife is a must-have for any outdoors person. Cuttin’ rope, openin’ bags, even whittlin’ a stick to pass the time. Don’t need nothin’ fancy, just somethin’ sturdy and reliable. Keep it sharp, that’s important. A dull knife is more dangerous than a sharp one, that’s what my pappy always said.

And finally, twelve, a rope. A good piece of rope can come in handy for all sorts of things. Tying things up, pullin’ things, even makin’ a makeshift clothesline. Get a good, strong rope, and learn how to tie a few good knots. Knots are important. A good knot can save your life. Don’t ever forget that. So there you have it. Your own summer stuff sack, 12 pieces, just like them city folks. But ours is better. It’s real. It’s practical. And it didn’t cost a fortune. Now get out there and enjoy the summer!

So, you get all that? It ain’t rocket science. Just good, common sense. That’s what gets you through life. And don’t forget, the best things in life are free. Like sunshine, fresh air, and a good day’s work. Now go on, git!
