Well, let me tell ya ’bout this Newberry football, ya hear? It ain’t fancy stuff, just a buncha boys runnin’ around with a ball, but folks ’round here, they get real worked up about it.
Newberry Wolves Football, that’s what they call it. Sounds kinda fierce, don’t it? Like a pack of wild animals chasin’ after somethin’. And I guess that’s kinda what it is, them boys chasin’ after that there football, tryin’ to get it across the line. I don’t rightly understand all the rules, but I know when they get that ball over, the crowd goes wild, and that’s gotta be good, right?
Now, if ya wanna watch these games, there’s all sorts of ways. You don’t gotta be right there on the field, freezin’ your behind off in the winter, or sweatin’ like a hog in the summer, though some folks like doin’ that, I reckon.
- They got this thing called the “radio.” That’s how we used to listen, back in the day. Just a fella talkin’ into a box, tellin’ ya what’s happenin’ on the field. You gotta use your imagination a bit, but it works.
- Then they got this “live stream” thing. That’s like watchin’ it on TV, but it comes through the computer, or your phone, or somethin’. My grandkid showed me once. It’s kinda like magic, seein’ them boys runnin’ around on that little screen. You can find it if you search for watch Newberry Wolves live on that internet thing. My grandkid also said something about ESPN, shows highlights or something, I don’t know. He knows more than me about these things.
- And if you got the money, you can watch it on TV, I guess. They say some games are on TV, especially when they get real good and play in those big games. But I ain’t got no fancy cable, so I stick with the radio mostly, or sometimes my grandkid helps me with that live stream thing.
This Newberry College Athletics, it ain’t just football, ya know. They got all sorts of sports. Basketball, wrestlin’, even women’s sports, which is somethin’ new, I tell ya. Back in my day, girls didn’t do no sportin’, ‘cept maybe chasin’ chickens. But times change, I guess. And these girls, they’re tough, I seen ‘em play sometimes. And there are many ways to watch. My grandkid told me the places to watch online games like DIRECTV STREAM, fuboTV, Hulu Live TV, Sling TV and something called FloSports for some games too, he has all these written down on a piece of paper, so he doesn’t forget. These are so new to me that I don’t even know what to call it.
Now, the Wolves, they play other schools. Valdosta State, that’s one I hear about a lot. They had a game recently, my grandkid was tellin’ me all about it. Said the Wolves didn’t win, lost 27 to 14. He was real upset, but I told him, “It’s just a game, boy. Ain’t the end of the world.” Apparently, the other team got more first downs and ran the ball more, more yards. My grandkid even knows the game stats. He also said the Wolves made it to the final score but still didn’t win. I don’t know much about these numbers, but it seems like Valdosta State was just a little bit better that day. He also said he watched it on which he says is different than FloSports. He’s got all these things, so complicated!
But that’s football, ya know? Sometimes ya win, sometimes ya lose. It’s like life, I reckon. Ups and downs, wins and losses. But these boys, they keep playin’, keep tryin’. And that’s what matters, right? Givin’ it your all, even when things get tough. And the folks around here, they support ‘em, no matter what. They wear the team colors, blue and gold I think, and they cheer real loud. It’s a whole community thing, ya see?
So, that’s Newberry football in a nutshell. Not fancy, but it’s ours. It brings people together, gives ’em somethin’ to root for. And in this world, I think that’s somethin’ special. Even an old lady like me can appreciate that, even if I don’t understand all the fuss about streaming video and live scores. Just give me a good game, a loud crowd, and maybe a hotdog, and I’m happy. And if the Wolves win, well, that’s just the cherry on top. Now, if you want to watch it yourself, remember those things my grandkid told me. Or ask your grandkid, they probably know more than me about these modern contraptions and where you can watch Newberry Wolves online without cable.
