Well, let me tell ya somethin’ about this Canton South football. It ain’t somethin’ fancy, ya hear? It’s just boys smackin’ into each other on a field, tryin’ to get that ball across the line. Folks ’round here, they get all worked up about it.
I remember when my grandson, little Mikey, played for them Canton South Wildcats. Bless his heart, he wasn’t the biggest fella, but he sure was scrappy. Reminded me of a banty rooster, all puffed up and ready to fight. He’d come home all bruised and muddy, grin from ear to ear. Said it was the best darn feelin’ in the world.
Now, this football team, they’ve been around for a while, I reckon. They say it all started way back when, in 1920, somethin’ like that. Some fellas in Canton, Ohio, got together and made this American Professional Football Association. Sounds fancy, huh? Well, they call it the NFL now. Big money, big games on TV. But back then, it was just a bunch of fellas playin’ for the love of the game, I betcha.
The Canton South High School team, they ain’t always winnin’, but they sure do try. They got a schedule every year, playin’ different schools. El Dorado High School, they’re one of ’em. I seen them Wildcats play the Griffins once. Boy, that was a close one! Down to the wire, nail-bitin’ stuff. Wildcats won by a hair, somethin’ like 27-26. The whole town was cheerin’ that night. Fireworks and everything! It was a real hootenanny.
This year, they got a new team, new schedule. You can find it online, they tell me. Livestreams and highlights, all that jazz. Folks are always lookin’ for them highlights, seein’ their boys do good. Makes ya proud, ya know? Even if they lose, you proud they went out there and gave it their all.
Mikey, he ain’t playin’ no more. Got himself a good job, married a nice girl. Got kids of his own now. But he still talks about them football days, like they were the best days of his life. He says it taught him somethin’ about workin’ hard, bein’ part of a team. Somethin’ about never givin’ up. I guess that’s somethin’ good, right?
- They practice hard, I hear. Runnin’ and liftin’ weights. Tryin’ to get strong.
- They got coaches yellin’ at ’em, tellin’ ’em what to do. Sounds like my old man.
- They gotta learn all them plays, gotta be smart. Football ain’t just about brawn, ya know.
This year’s team, I don’t know much about ’em yet. But I reckon they’re just like all the other teams before ’em. Young boys tryin’ to make a name for themselves, tryin’ to make their town proud. And that’s somethin’ special, I tell ya. That’s what Canton South football is all about. It ain’t just a game, it’s about community, about comin’ together and cheerin’ on our own.
So, if you’re ever around Canton, Ohio, and you hear that crowd roarin’, go on and check it out. You might just see somethin’ special. You might just see them Wildcats fightin’ their hearts out. And who knows, you might even get caught up in it all. Start cheerin’ along with the rest of us crazy folks.
It ain’t the fanciest thing in the world, but it’s real. And sometimes, that’s all that matters. And it’s been going on for years and years, just like those old fellas in 1920. They probably didn’t have no fancy stadiums or nothin’, just a field and a ball and a whole lot of heart. That’s all you need, I reckon.
