Can Am Rugby 2024: What You Need to Know This Year?

Okay, so, I’ve been meaning to share my experience with the Can-Am Rugby Tournament this year. It was a big one, the 50th, no less! I’ve been going to these on and off for a few years, but this one was special.

First off, I started getting ready for this thing months in advance. I mean, it’s not every day you get to be part of such a big rugby event. The Can-Am, for those who don’t know, it started way back in 1973. Some guys from the Mountaineers Rugby Club got it going, and it’s just grown bigger and bigger.

Getting There and Settling In

I packed my bags and made my way to Saranac Lake. This year, they also had stuff going on in Tupper Lake. I got there a couple of days early, just to get a feel for the place and avoid the last-minute rush. I checked into my little cabin – nothing fancy, but hey, it was close to all the action.

The Atmosphere

Man, the vibe around town was electric. You could tell everyone was pumped for the tournament. I bumped into a bunch of old friends from previous tournaments, and we all got hyped up together. It felt like a huge reunion, but with way more rugby.

  • First day, I went to register. The lines were long, but everyone was in good spirits. I got my player’s pack, looked at the schedule, and started planning my weekend.
  • I made sure to hit up the opening ceremony. It was pretty cool, seeing all the teams marching in, the speeches, the whole deal. You could feel the history and the passion in the air.

The Games

Now, about the games. I played in the Old Boys division, which is basically for the, shall we say, “more experienced” players. Let me tell you, these guys don’t mess around. We had a few tough matches, but we held our own. I even managed to score a try in our second game, which felt amazing. We didn’t win the whole thing, but that wasn’t the point. It was about playing hard, having fun, and enjoying the camaraderie. There was every level of play going on, all weekend long, everywhere you turned, there was a match happening.

More Than Just Rugby

But the Can-Am isn’t just about the games. There’s a whole social aspect to it. Every night, there were parties and events. I went to a few, met some interesting folks, and just soaked in the atmosphere. One night, there was this massive bonfire, and everyone was just hanging out, telling stories, and having a good time.

Wrapping Up

By Sunday, I was exhausted but in the best way possible. I watched the finals for some of the divisions, cheered like crazy, and then started packing up. Saying goodbye is always tough, but I knew I’d be back. The Can-Am Rugby Tournament is more than just a sporting event. It is a real community, and being part of its 50th year was something I will not forget.

So, that’s my Can-Am story for this year. If you ever get a chance to go, do it. Whether you play or just watch, you are in for a treat. It is something really special.
