Well, let me tell ya somethin’ about this Baldwin Wallace football, y’know, the one they got over there in Berea, Ohio.
The Baldwin Wallace Yellow Jackets, that’s what they call ’em. Heard they’re part of somethin’ called the Ohio Athletic Conference, the OAC. Folks say it’s a pretty big deal, this NCAA Division III thing. Don’t know much about it myself, but sounds fancy.
Now, they got these young fellas playin’ the football. Big strong boys, runnin’ and hittin’ each other. They got a whole bunch of ’em, a whole team! You can find their names and where they come from on somethin’ called a “roster.” They even got their heights listed, like how tall they are. Guess that matters in football, bein’ tall and all.
- They got games, see? A whole “season” of ’em.
- Sometimes they play at home, right there in Berea.
- Sometimes they go off to other places to play.
Heard they was doin’ pretty good this year, winnin’ some games. Folks was talkin’ ’bout how they won their first three games, then had a big one against Mount Union. Mount Union, now that’s a team everyone knows ’round here. They’re always real good, ranked high and all. Folks say Baldwin Wallace played ’em tough, even though they lost.
This Baldwin Wallace place, it ain’t just football, ya know. It’s a school, a “university” they call it. They teach all sorts of things there. Smart folks go there, learnin’ all kinds of stuff. And they got these “student-athletes,” the boys playin’ football and studyin’ at the same time. Must be hard work, doin’ both. Heard some of ’em even got awards for bein’ good at football. They call it the “All-OAC Team.” Good for them, I say.
They got a fella, the “coach,” he tells the boys what to do. He’s in charge of the team. And they got other folks helpin’ out too. Heard they got some new folks helpin’ with the runnin’ and jumpin’ part of things, the “track and field” they call it. It’s all part of this “athletics” thing they got goin’ on at the school.
Baldwin Wallace, it’s been around a long time, they say. A “founding member” of that OAC thing. They got all sorts of programs there, helpin’ the students with their schoolwork and stuff. And they got lots of folks tryin’ to get in. Heard only about three-quarters of the folks who apply actually get to go there. Must be a good place, if so many folks wanna go.
So, that’s the gist of it, what I heard about this Baldwin Wallace football. Boys playin’ hard, goin’ to school, and tryin’ their best. It’s somethin’ folks ’round here get excited about, cheerin’ on the Yellow Jackets. Good for them, I say. Gives folks somethin’ to do, somethin’ to talk about.
They got this game comin’ up soon. The eighth of the season, they say. And it’s at home! Folks will be out there, watchin’ the boys play. Hopin’ they win, of course. That’s what it’s all about, ain’t it? Winnin’ and doin’ your best.
Anyways, that’s all I got to say about it. Just a bunch of boys playin’ football, goin’ to school, and tryin’ to make somethin’ of themselves. Good for them, I say. Good for them.
