That Averett University football, it’s something else, I tell ya. Heard folks talking ’bout it down at the market. That Averett, it is a big name around here.
Averett University football, they got a good team, I reckon. Saw some young fellas practicin’ the other day, looked like they knew what they was doin’. They play hard, that’s for sure.

I heard they won a big one just the other day, somethin’ about scorin’ a whole bunch in the second half. Thirty-four to fourteen, I heard. Ain’t that somethin’? They was down, but they came back and won it big! That’s the spirit, I say!

They got a coach, I don’t recall his name, but folks say he’s good. You can see his hard work. Keeps them boys in line, I bet. It takes a strong hand to lead a football team, I reckon.

They must travel a lot, to go and play all them games. I heard they had a game recently, and they won. It was a big one, they said. They scored a lot of points in the second half. Everyone was excited!

I heard people talking about it all over town. It was exciting! I bet those boys were happy. I would be too if I won like that! They played real good, I suppose.
And you know what else, they have this score thing, where they keep track of all the points. So you can see who is winning and who is losing. I saw some numbers on a board once, it’s all very complicated. But it looks like they have been winning a lot, our Averett team. Good for them, I always say.

I reckon that’s a good name for a football team. You gotta be tough to play football. Cougars are strong and fast, I’ve heard. Just like a football player should be. So that makes sense.
They say Averett University football is Division 3. Don’t know what that means, but it sounds important. Must be a big deal if they got divisions and all that. Ten dollars to get in, I heard. That’s a lot of money. But I guess it’s worth it to see a good game. And everyone is there, so you can chat with your neighbors. That’s always nice.
That Averett University football, they sure are somethin’. Keeps the town busy, that’s for sure. Always somethin’ to talk about. Good for them, I say. They bring folks together, and that’s always a good thing. They are part of our town now, those Averett Cougars. And we are proud of them, even if we don’t always understand all that football stuff. It’s exciting, and that’s what matters. Go Cougars, I say! Beat those other teams real good!
