Rugby shirt dress: How to style it for any occasion, from casual to chic looks
Okay, so I’ve been seeing rugby shirts everywhere lately. You know, those thick, collared shirts with the stripes? Yeah, those. They were all over the runways for spring and fall 2024, and it looks like they’re going to be big next year, too. I figured, why not try to make a dress out of one? It’s a little out there, but I was up for a challenge.
First, I grabbed an oversized rugby shirt from my closet. It’s navy blue with some white stripes, a classic look. I wanted something roomy so I could really play around with the shape. Then, I laid it out on my table to get a good look at it. I thought about how I could turn this sporty top into a dress.
- Step 1: Define the waist. I put the shirt on and used a belt to cinch it at my waist. This gave me a basic dress shape to start with. I marked where the belt sat with some pins.
- Step 2: Create a skirt. I decided to use some leftover fabric I had lying around. It was a white, flowy material that I thought would contrast nicely with the thick cotton of the rugby shirt. I cut the fabric into a large rectangle and sewed it to the bottom of the shirt, right where I’d marked the waist.
- Step 3: Adjust the fit. Once the skirt was attached, I tried the dress on again. It was a little loose around the waist, so I took it in a bit on the sides. I also shortened the sleeves of the rugby shirt to make it more suitable for warmer weather.
- Step 4: Add some finishing touches. To give the dress a more polished look, I added a white ribbon around the waist, covering the seam where the shirt and skirt met. I also added some buttons to the front of the shirt for a bit of detail.
After a few hours of work, I finally had my rugby shirt dress! It was definitely unique, and I was pretty proud of how it turned out. It’s casual, comfortable, and has a sporty-chic vibe that I really like.
How to Style it?
I’ve been experimenting with different ways to style the dress. For a casual daytime look, I wear it with sneakers and a denim jacket. If I want to dress it up a bit, I pair it with ankle boots and a cardigan. I can even add a blazer and some loafers to make it more office-appropriate, assuming the workplace dress code is relatively relaxed, of course. Overall, I’m really happy with my rugby shirt dress. It was a fun project, and it’s a versatile piece that I can wear in a lot of different ways. Who knew a simple rugby shirt could be so much more?
