1997 Little Cypress Mauriceville High Varsity Football Team: Where Are They Now?
Alright, listen up, y’all. We gonna talk about this… uh… this Little Cypress Mauriceville High Varsity Football team, from back in ’97. Yeah, 1997. A long, long time ago, when I was… well, never you mind about that.
So, this team, the Bears, they played football. You know, that game with the pigskin? Runnin’ around, throwin’ the ball, smashin’ into each other. Kids these days, they got their fancy phones and their… whatchamacallits… but back then, football was a big deal. Especially high school football.
Now, I ain’t gonna lie, I don’t remember all the fancy details. Wasn’t my place to keep track of scores and all that. But I do remember the feelin’ in the air. Fridays, the whole town would be buzzin’. Everybody talkin’ ’bout the Bears. You could feel the excitement, you know? Like somethin’ big was gonna happen.
They played at Little Cypress-Mauriceville High School. Up there on Highway 87 North, in Orange. Big school, I reckon. Lots of kids. And these football boys, they were somethin’ else. Strong, fast… at least that’s how I remember them. Always trainin’, always practicin’. Runnin’ drills, liftin’ weights… Workin’ hard, that’s what they did.
- They had a coach, or maybe a few coaches. Names like Peevey, Vansa, Dyer, Seymour… Gonzales too, I think. He was the special teams guy. Whatever that means. Kickin’ the ball, I guess?
- They had a schedule, games they played. Don’t ask me who they played against. Too many names to remember. But I know they played hard, every game. Win or lose.
- And they had a roster, a list of all the players. Young fellas, most of ’em. Full of energy and vinegar. Probably caused their mamas a whole heap of worry, runnin’ around like wild horses.
Folks would get their football scores from… somewhere. Newspapers, maybe? Or maybe they just listened to the radio. Back then, we didn’t have all this fancy internet stuff. You had to wait for the news, or you had to be there, at the game. Smellin’ the grass and hearin’ the crowd roar. That was the best way, I tell ya.
They had rankings too, I heard. Told you where the team stood compared to others. But honestly, I never paid much attention to that. To me, they were always number one. Our boys, representin’ our town. That’s all that mattered.
Throwback Thursday, they call it now. When folks look back at old pictures and memories. Well, this whole team, this 1997 Little Cypress-Mauriceville Bears football team… they’re a Throwback Thursday for me. A reminder of a simpler time, when football was king and the whole town came together to cheer on their boys.
And Dave Campbell’s Texas Football… they probably wrote about ’em too. Everybody knew about Dave Campbell, if you cared about football in Texas. He kept track of all the teams, all the scores, all the good players. I bet he had some nice things to say about our Bears.
So, yeah, that’s what I remember about the Little Cypress Mauriceville High Varsity Football team of 1997. A bunch of tough kids, playin’ their hearts out, makin’ the whole town proud. Good times, good times.
