Well, let me tell ya ’bout these pillbox hats. You know, the little ones, ain’t got no brim or nothin’, just sit right on top of your head. Real simple-lookin’ things, but they used to be all the rage, or so I hear.
They call ’em pillbox hats ’cause they look like them little containers folks used to keep their pills in. You know, the round ones or the ones with six sides. Guess they didn’t have much imagination back then, just namin’ things after whatever they looked like.
I ain’t never worn one myself, mind you. Too fancy for my taste. But I seen pictures of ladies wearin’ ’em, especially that Jackie Kennedy lady. She was a real looker, and she made them hats look good, I gotta say. Her husband, the president, I think he was. She wore one to his big party when he started workin’ in that big white house. After that, seems like every gal wanted one. This was way back when, mind you. Before your time, probably.
- Them hats, they weren’t always for fancy ladies, though. Way back when, soldiers wore somethin’ like ’em, at least that’s what I heard. Guess they needed somethin’ to keep the sun outta their eyes, or somethin’.
- But then them fashion folks got a hold of the idea and turned it into somethin’ for the ladies. They made ’em outta all sorts of fancy stuff, like velvet and wool, and they put little doodads on ’em, like bows and feathers.
- I tell ya, some of them hats looked like somethin’ you’d put on a cake, not on your head. But that’s fashion for ya, always comin’ up with somethin’ new and crazy.
Anyways, these pillbox hats, they were real popular in the fifties and sixties. That’s what they tell me. I was busy raisin’ kids and workin’ in the fields back then, didn’t have much time for fashion. But I remember seein’ pictures in magazines, and them ladies always looked so put-together with their pillbox hats and their gloves and their fancy dresses.
Now, you don’t see ’em much anymore. Folks wear all sorts of different hats these days, baseball caps and them big floppy things that keep the sun off your face. But I guess fashion always comes back around, so maybe someday them pillbox hats will be popular again. Who knows? Maybe I’ll even try one on myself, just for laughs.
You can still find ’em, I reckon. Seen some advertised online, sayin’ they got free shippin’ and money back if you don’t like it. And some places sellin’ other kinds of hats too, like beanies, for men and women. Not my style, but some folks like ’em.
It’s funny how things change, ain’t it? Somethin’ can be the hottest thing one minute and then forgotten the next. But then, years later, somebody digs it up and it’s new again. That’s how it goes, I guess. Just like them old songs they play on the radio. You hear ’em when you’re young, then you forget about ’em, and then all of a sudden, they’re back and everybody’s singin’ along.
So, that’s the story of them pillbox hats, as best as I can tell it. Little hats, big history, I guess. If you ever see one at a yard sale or somethin’, maybe you should snatch it up. Who knows, it might be worth somethin’ someday. Or maybe you could just wear it and feel like a fancy lady from the old days.
And if you are lookin’ for a hat for the cold, they got them beanie things too. Keep your head warm, that’s what’s important. Don’t need no fancy hat to do that, just somethin’ warm and snug. But you go ahead and wear whatever you like. It ain’t nobody’s business but your own.
