Alright, so, y’know, I saw these fellas playin’ football on the TV. Them 49ers, yeah, that’s the team. And I noticed somethin’ on their helmets. A little number, a “64” it was. Stuck right on the back, like a fly on a cow’s behind.
So, I got to thinkin’, what’s that number all about? It ain’t no player’s number, not no more. They got their own numbers, big and bold on their jerseys. This “64” was different, smaller, kinda special-like.
Well, I asked around, you know, talked to some folks who know a thing or two about football. And wouldn’t ya know it, that “64” is for a fella named Dave Wilcox. Big man, they say. A real tough player, back in the day. A Hall of Famer, whatever that means. Sounds fancy, though.
- He played for the 49ers, see. Wore that number “64” himself.
- And he passed away, not too long ago.
- So, the team, they wanted to remember him.
They put that “64” on their helmets, so everyone would see it. So everyone would remember Dave. It’s like a little reminder, a little way of sayin’, “Hey, we ain’t forgotten you, Dave.” It’s kinda nice, ain’t it? Reminds me of when we used to put flowers on grandpa’s grave, just to show we still cared.
Now, I ain’t no expert on football, mind you. I watch it sometimes, mostly when there ain’t nothin’ else on. But even I can see that this “64” thing is somethin’ special. It ain’t just about the game, it’s about somethin’ more. It’s about respect, and rememberin’ folks who came before.
I saw some folks talkin’ about the helmets themselves, you know, the design and all. They said the 49ers changed their helmets a while back, in 1996 or somethin’. Made the logo a little different, added some colors. But that ain’t got nothin’ to do with the “64,” see. That “64” is all about Dave.
And you know, it’s funny, I heard some folks sayin’ all the players wear number 64 now. That ain’t right, see. They just got the sticker, but their jerseys are still their own numbers. It’s just that sticker that’s the same for everyone, to honor Dave. It’s like wearin’ a black armband, I guess, but on their helmets instead. A little sign of respect, a little way of sayin’ goodbye.
Some folks were even lookin’ to buy these helmets, like the ones the players wear, with the “64” on ’em. I guess they wanna have a piece of history, or somethin’. I saw some ads talkin’ about “49er Full Size Helmet” and “check out eBay”. Folks will buy anything these days, Lord have mercy. But I reckon that ain’t for me. I’m happy just watchin’ the game and seein’ that little “64” on the TV. It’s a good reminder, you know? A reminder to be thankful for the folks who came before, and to remember the ones we’ve lost.
So, that’s the story of the “64” on the 49ers helmets. It ain’t complicated, just a simple way of rememberin’ a good man. And that’s somethin’ I can understand, even if I don’t know a lick about football.
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I think I’ll go make myself a cup of tea. All this talkin’ about football has made me tired. And maybe, just maybe, I’ll watch another game later. And when I see that “64” on those helmets, I’ll remember Dave Wilcox, and I’ll remember that even in a rough and tumble game like football, there’s still room for a little bit of kindness and respect.
