Well, let me tell ya somethin’ ’bout this Kentucky Wildcats basketball logo, you know, the one they slap on all them shirts and hats and such.
The Wildcat, that’s what they call it. Been around for a long, long time, they say. I reckon it started way back when, maybe even before I was born, who knows? They got this fella, a student all dressed up in a wildcat suit, been prancin’ around since ’76 or ’77, somethin’ like that. He’s the main mascot, the big cheese, you know?
Then they got this other one, Scratch, they call him. A bit more cuddly lookin’, I guess. For the little ‘uns, maybe? So they don’t get scared by that first wildcat, all fierce and whatnot.
Now, this logo, it ain’t always been the same, you see. Even things folks love, sometimes they gotta change ’em up a bit, make ’em look a little snazzier, I suppose. Back in 2017, they did just that. Got themselves a brand spankin’ new wildcat logo. Before that, it was the same old one for nigh on twenty years, can you believe it? Twenty years! That’s a long time, longer than it takes to grow a good patch of corn, I tell ya.
I ain’t no artist or nothin’, but I can tell ya, that new logo, it’s somethin’ else. Looks real mean and tough, like a wildcat should, I reckon. Makes them other teams tremble in their boots, or so they say. I seen it on TV a few times, when my grandson’s watchin’ the games. He yells and hollers at that TV, somethin’ fierce. Gets all worked up about them Wildcats.
- They say the logo, it ain’t got no fancy copyright stuff on it, ’cause it’s just shapes and letters. I don’t rightly understand all that legal mumbo jumbo, but I guess it means anybody could draw it if they wanted to. Not that I would, I can barely draw a straight line, let alone a fancy wildcat.
- But the real deal, that’s the one they put on the jerseys, you know, the one the fellas wear when they’re runnin’ up and down the court, throwin’ that ball around. That’s the one that matters.
Now, they got all sorts of files and pictures of this logo, little ones, big ones, all different sizes. They call ’em SVG files and such. Sounds complicated, but I reckon it just means they can make the logo big as a barn or small as a button, and it still looks good. Technology these days, it’s somethin’ else, I tell ya.
This wildcat, it’s more than just a picture, you see. It’s a symbol, like that eagle they got on the money, or that flag they wave around. It stands for somethin’. Stands for Kentucky, for the Wildcats, for all them folks who love the basketball team. And let me tell ya, there’s a whole heap of folks who love them Wildcats.
So, next time you see that wildcat logo, you remember what I told ya. It ain’t just a pretty picture, it’s a whole lot more than that. It’s history, it’s pride, it’s Kentucky, through and through. And that’s somethin’ worth cheerin’ for, I reckon.
Anyways, that’s all I know about that wildcat picture. It’s just a picture to me, but those young folks, they sure do get riled up about it.
