Alright, let me tell ya ’bout this Samurai 7s Rugby, whatever that is. Sounds fancy, like somethin’ them city folks would yap about. But from what I gather, it’s a bunch of fellas runnin’ around with a ball.
Now, they say this Samurai team, started way back in 1996 by some fella named Terry Sands. Terry, huh? Sounds like a good ol’ boy. Anyway, he started this team, Shogun Rugby they call it now, used to be Samurai somethin’ or other. Terry, he liked how them Japanese fellas played rugby, all spirited and tough like, so he made his own team.
- They weren’t no regular team, mind you. They’re what they call “invitational.” Means they pick and choose the best players, I reckon.
- And let me tell ya, they’re good. Real good. Folks say they’re one of the best in the world at this 7s rugby. Seven fellas on a team, runnin’ and passin’ that ball. Must be a sight to see, all that speed and whatnot.
They got a whole mess of followers, too. Thousands of ‘em, on them computery things, followin’ every move they make. Shows ya they’re somethin’ special, right? All them city folks with their fancy gadgets, watchin’ these rugby fellas.
Now, this 7s rugby, it’s a bit different from the regular kind. Faster, I hear. Less fellas on the field, so more room to run, I guess. And them fellas, they gotta be in tip-top shape. Runnin’ and tacklin’ and all that, must be plum wearin’ em out. But they get paid good, some of ‘em. Especially them Australian fellas. Heard they make a hundred and ten thousand dollars a year! That’s a whole lotta hay, let me tell ya.
This Shogun team, they’re all about bein’ the best. They wanna find the best players, train ‘em up good, and win all them rugby games. Sounds like a lot of work to me, but hey, if they like it, more power to ‘em.
And then there’s them Fiji fellas. They’re good at this rugby too. Real good. See, they don’t have a lot of them fancy professional teams over there, so all the good players end up playin’ this 7s rugby. Kinda like how we used to have town baseball teams, everyone playin’ ‘cause they loved it, not ‘cause they was gettin’ paid big bucks.
So, this Samurai, or Shogun, whatever they call themselves, they’re a big deal in this 7s rugby world. They got history, they got good players, and they got that spirit, like them Japanese fellas Terry Sands liked so much. They run, they pass, they tackle, and they try their darndest to win. And that, I reckon, is all there is to it. Just a bunch of fellas playin’ ball, tryin’ to be the best.
It ain’t so different from us folks, when you think about it. We all just tryin’ to do our best, whether it’s farmin’ or sellin’ eggs or runnin’ around with a rugby ball. We all just tryin’ to make somethin’ of ourselves, in our own way. And that, I think, is somethin’ worth admirin’, no matter who ya are or what ya do.
