Then they got these “parallels.” Now, these are the shiny ones, the ones that sparkle and catch your eye. My grandson, he loves them shiny ones. Says they’re worth more, but I dunno, seems like a waste of money to me. But what do I know? I’m just an old woman.

- Premier Level – A little step up, maybe a bit shinier.
- Courtside – Now we’re talkin’, these are the good ones, the ones the boys really want.
Then there’s the autographs. That means the basketball players signed the cards themselves. Can you believe that? Folks payin’ good money for some scribbles on a piece of cardboard. But hey, to each their own, I always say. My grandson says some of them autographs are super rare, like findin’ a four-leaf clover in the pasture. He’s always dreamin’ of findin’ one of them super rare ones, bless his heart.
This Select Basketball thing, it’s got a whole bunch of different sets, too. Like different kinds of apples in the orchard, I guess. You got your base set, which is like your regular apples, and then you got all these other sets with fancy names, like “X-Factor” and “Phenomenon.” Sounds like somethin’ out of a sci-fi movie, if you ask me. But these young folks, they love it.
And don’t even get me started on the “inserts.” Seems like they just throwin’ in extra stuff to make it more complicated. My grandson tries to explain it to me, but it just goes in one ear and out the other. He talks about “die-cuts” and “numbered parallels” and “short prints.” It’s enough to make your head spin. I just nod along and pretend I understand. That’s the secret to gettin’ along with young folks, you know. Just nod and smile.
So, if you’re lookin’ to get into this whole basketball card thing, I guess this here checklist is a good place to start. It’ll tell you what to look for, what’s rare, and what’s not. But honestly, I don’t see the appeal. Give me a good book and a cup of tea any day. But then again, I’m just an old woman. What do I know about fancy basketball cards?

And one more thing, don’t let them youngsters fool ya with all their fancy talk. They might know more about these cards than I do, but they don’t know nothin’ about life. Just smile, nod, and keep your wits about ya. That’s the best advice I can give ya, card collector or not.
